I can sorta stick weld.

Hey all!I have been taking welding courses at my "college" and though I haven't taken the stick class, I have sort of learned how to run beads. I was running 3/32 6011 rods on a china Bx1-100b ac welder, at 100 amps( I know that is to high now) and later at 80amps. How does The ac effect the weld? What causes the massive amounts of pitting along the edges of the bead and how do I get rid of it? sorry the camera on my phone stinks.thanks,Eric Attached Images

Reply:polarity? it's ac so isn't it switching constantly.I don't think I'm dragging. what is whipping?I am dragging for the scratch start, but then am holding it up and at a 30 degree angle or so.I really am a noob to stick, and any knowledge I have comes from my oxy, tig, and mig classes. would 6013 give me a cleaner weld?

Reply:Tighten your arc gap for less boogers. Whipping is as described, build a pool, and whip rod out, its a fast freeze rod, so the pool solidifies. Whip maybe 1/4-1/2 in front of the direction of travel, then bring back and pause, whip and pause, etc... You will see dimes stack up. Arrowheads are indicative of travel speed too fast. Reply:Can you see the weld pool?You need to be using a #12 or even #14 glass to look right at the weld pool.Also to take your welding practice to a higher level start preparing test plates.Take two plates 1/8-1/4 thickness,  then slightly bevel the mating edges,tack weld them at each end, and run your bead right down that "V" groove. Reply:didn't get to weld today, but I will update tomorrow, with an atempt at whipping, and a tighter arc. It's a lot tougher seeing the weld pool than with tig. somebody suggested magnifiers and i don't have a helmet that will fit them. I have been siting on a crate, welding on a concrete floor propped up on angle iron so its been a little awkward, but I guess awkward positions will be something that welding presents.Thanks,Eric the newbie

Reply:It didn't rain here but I didn't get to welding. it was chilly out and I didnt feel like braving the cold. Ill practice on sunday when i get back from hunting with my father.
