I have to take a 6g welding test, I've been welding for about a year now. I've never taken a 6g welding test is it a tough test?
Reply:I took a 6G pipe test a few years back.pipe coupons are tacked together then placed at a 45degree angle.they stay at this angle during the entire test.I tested on 8 inch sch 80 carbon steel pipe.6010 root, 7018 fill and cap.If it is a plate test you are taking ,i would guess the plates are at a 45 degree angle during the test.the pipe test will get you pipe and plate qualified.I dont know what process you are using ,i stick welded mine.6G just means that the test pieces are at a 45 degree angle.I welded about a dozen practice coupons before i tested ,passed on first try, If it is your dime[my test was] make sure you are ready with lots of practice.
Reply:I just finished up my 6G test for Fluer thurs and passed first time. We welded 2in boiler tube with a heli-arc root/hot pass and 7018 fill and cap. Hardest thing for me were the restarts on the back side of the pipe, but i learned quickly after my instructor showed me what those restarts looked like after we arc gouged em.....nothing but porosity, nasty stuff..Not sure what you are welding (pipe or plate) but a 6G will qualify for you for both..Start Practicing!Owner - Certified Welding & Fabrication / 22yrs in businessSteamboat Springs, Co(970) 879-5491AWS structural shopHMI 70t iron worker2 field trucks specailizing in structural steel, aluminum and stainless steel
Reply:I'll be welding pipe, I went to a friends house and he thought I did well. I think I'll pass but there's always what if
Reply:Well the guy giving the test was very picky, out of five he kept me and another guy. I got my root in perfect but I failed the test because of a air bubble, the instructur said he was impressed since it was my first 6g test so maybe I'll pass the next one. |
