anybody else ever had a bad spool of flux core wire ? By that I mean, I bought a 10lb spool of Hobart .30 flux core from Tractor Supply over the weekend. Ran out today and installed the new one. I ran the lead out to my gun and started welding. I made 10-12 small runs of bead and the gun stopped feeding. Opened the side of welder and there wire coming off the spool somehow had a loop going over the top of it cinching it tight to the spool. I cut it free, pulled the remnants through my gun, reloaded and started welding again only for it to happen again. I did this process about 3-4 times. Finally took the spool out of the machine and made a bracket to hold it while I took off walking with the end of the wire. I'd get 15 or so feet out and it would get caught up with a loop over the end going out. I repeated this probably another 4-5 times, would get 15 feet or so out and it'd hang up. After pulling nearly a third of the wire off the spool, it finally quit doing this, Installed the spool and finished welding this afternoon with no more problems. Called the guy at Tractor Supply and he said bring in the wire I pulled off the spool and he'd replace me with a couple of 2lb spools.
Reply:sounds like it came unspooled partially, and someone just tightened the wire back on.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools
Reply:Is the tension on your feeder spool adjusted properly? I'm going to guess that you got what fishermen call a backlash or birds nest. When you opened the box did the wire look wound ok?"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:Did you try adjusting the spool brake? Quite often a full spool has enough mass that when you let off the trigger, the spool will continue to rotate for a second or two. Because the spool is full, the wire will slip over the top and tangle. The next time you pull the trigger, the drive rolls will take up the slack and you have a mess. The less wire on the spool, the less likely it is to happen. Just increase the drag, and run off some wire while observing how quickly the spool stops turning. Just don't force the drive roll motor to work any harder than necessary.
Reply:yeah, the brake was the very first thing I thought of when it happened the first time so I made sure it was set properly the second time and it just kept doing it. Even when I had it tied down and was pulling wire off it did it until like I said, after I got about 1/3 of the roll off then it spooled correctly. Even when it was brand new and I took it out of the packaging, it looked wound correctly and tight and I made sure not to let any slack get in it when I spooled it up for the first time..... Just never had that happen before and wandering if anyone else has had it happen.
