I had an agreement with a customer to do some trailer work for him using his equipment.  It was all carbon steel that is to be mig welded.  He asked me to build a belt guard for one of his compressors.  Of course I said SURE.Here is the non OSHA machine Attached ImagesReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Did he make the air compressor himself? Neat idea.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Material is 12' 3 X 3 X 1/4" aluminum, some expanded aluminum and 1/4 X 1" aluminum.  HIS machine is what I named Big bertha.  It has some quirks. Water cooled torch, capacity up to 435 amps AC or DC.  Only problem I had is NO post flow.  After a few beads I learned to pull the torch away and hold the pedal down to keep my Ball shiny on the 1/8" pure tungston. I kept blowing the 50 amp breaker it was plugged into. These are the welds done by Big Bertha.Last edited by David R; 07-26-2007 at 07:12 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:The next morning, I decided it was more fun to weld with square waves instead of round waves, so I packed up my TA-185.  I started at 10% cleaning for most heat because you CAN'T weld 1/4" aluminum with only 185 amps....Right?  Everything was new, but I did no prep.  Next was 20% cleaning, then I setteled on 25%  The machine had MUCH more heat on the lower Hz for the AC than at the higher settings.  It made scrawney little beads at 100 HZ and nice wide flat ones from 15 to about 33.  Once I got up to 45 Hz things went down hill.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Here is the finished product.  I put a dime there just for fun on the back side.  Attachment 11404I had the pedal all the way down the whole job.  The limiting factor was the torch getting too hot to handle and once I could smell rubber burning.  The machine fan would reach full speed after 1/2 or so of a 1/8" 5356 filler rod. but never went into thermal overload or shutdow.  The air coming out of it was warm, nothing more.  With this torch I could never overheat this machine.  After I stopped welding each time, the fan would slow back down in just a couple of minutes.Guess who is buying a water cooler? Thanks for looking Attached ImagesReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:The black spots in the last pic are where I touched the tungston to the work.  I used the grey 3/32 that came with the machine.  It worked quite well.  I usually use red, but I ran out doing the BBQ grill a few weeks ago.  Total time about 8 to 10 hours including planning, cutting, welding and mounting.  Getting out all equipment an putting it all back. The 2 welds on the lower right were with a spoolgun attached to a snap on welder.  Arc was NOT stable, so I gave up on the spool gun for TIG.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Yes tanglediver.  You can tig weld without the HF box, but with the risk of contaminating the tungsten when scratch starting.  The HF box also has arc stabilization which is nice.
Reply:gotta love the little TA-185. i have been very happy with mine. i'm lerning to stick weld with it now. at the time i got it about 8 or 9 months ago it was only $1750 ready to weld thats hard to beat.i have been using 2%lanthanated with excelent results in AC and DC. i made my cart for it out of aluminum and was very happy with the performance of it. all in all i'm very glad i got it.nice work on the belt guard. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.

Reply:Thanks for the complementsThat has to be the biggest aluminum job I had except  I did a dock board for forklifts.  The dockboard was 1".  We cranked my Dads Linde all the way up and used .045 5356.  I preheated the whole thing with a weedburner till it was smoking.   (400-500?)DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Originally Posted by WelderBoyI must be mistaken then.  It's been years since I was at college and haven't welded aluminum since.  It must have been straight argon or C02 most likely argon.  I know it was not a mixed gas that is for sure and we were definitely using AC.  And I know for a fact it was 140 amps and there was perfect fusion and penetration when I cut and bent my coupons.I'll find out what to use on it soon when I get my shop and an AC tombstone to hook my HF box to.  David, are you backing off significantly after you burn through the oxidation?

Reply:In our neighborhood, they keep most of it in the Sun...What we need to do is go get a load of helium at night.   As a slight thread highjack, is there some sort of clutch or something on engine-drive compressors or are most direct belt drive?  I am curious because I had wanted to use a tiller motor to make a engine drive compressor for my dad.Last edited by smithboy; 07-29-2008 at 10:37 AM.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.Originally Posted by smithboyIn our neighborhood, they keep most of it in the Sun...What we need to do is go get a load of helium at night.   As a slight thread highjack, is there some sort of clutch or something on engine-drive compressors or are most direct belt drive?  I am curious because I had wanted to use a tiller motor to make a engine drive compressor for my dad.

Reply:If Big Bertha is a 360A/BP,  the input amps at wide open are 212.   I'll bet you were popping the tiny 50 amp breaker.
Reply:Its been a year since the original post.  Don't bother knocking inverters, The TA-185 is working like the day I bought it.  I upgraded to a water cooled torch with the check from that job.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
