Figured I'd build a new bumper since I smashed my other one on a big rock in the field.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:Nice job Dewayne. I was hoping you were gonna leave it like it was in the 4th pic down...Kinda like giant curb feelers for when you're going in reverse. BTW, How'd that Bud Light can sneek up on all the regular Bud? http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories

Reply:LOL, I was thinkin of one of those ball guides when it was at that point too.  The light weight can come from one of my friends that came over to watch, If I hadn't smashed the other cans I had that morning I could've lined the whole bumper  This would be much easier if I had more equiptment.  I still haven't got the design worked out yet, I ain't artistic whatsoever so it may wind up looking like ****.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:Looks almost store-bought!!!  Good job.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.

Reply:Looking good so far. What did you use to do the bending?  Just heat and a l-o-n-g lever? And  the diamond plate welded to the channel, right?  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:Looks good to me, I wish I would have had some diamond plate when I built mine. The only question I have is "did you make sure the tailgate will open ?" The only reason I am asking is that gap between the bumper and tailgate looks a little tight.

Reply:the only thing I'm concerned about now is the place to get my spare tire out.  I think I can drill a hole and still get to it though, we'll see.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:The tailgate will open fine, that's the first thing I checked when I put the treadplate on.[/QUOTE]I figured that you had checked it,I was just wondering because my brother put his alittle to close and had some clearance problems.
Reply:Not trying to steal your thunder, here, Dewayne, but here's one I built a year or so ago ....  fast, simple, and functional.   Just a 4x6 tube, with doors on each end, hitch welded below, includes a hinged license plate cover and an industrial type 7-way plug on the other side of the receiver.   Doors are so I can slide prybars, cheater bars, whatever, inside, keep them out of the bed.   This one happens to be 1/4" wall, just what I had lying around, scrap from some job or another   Could've easily used 3/16 wall, or even 1/8 wall, save weight, this is only on a 1/2T pickup.  No gussets to speak of underneath, if I used the lighter stuff, maybe I would have put some bigger ones in.  Mounts are 1/4" formed angle, bolted underneath the frame 2' back, trimmed to fit, notched to fit around the spring hangers, and 1/4 x 4 flat on top, vertical, bolted to the frame, and welded to the tube and the lower mounts.   Nowhere near as stylish, but fast, cheap, and fits my needs perfectly ....Oh, and just painted with a couple rattle-cans,,,,,,  I think we got the colors pretty close .....    Attached Images
Reply:I drilled and tapped a couple holes, bolted a little cover over my spare tire hole ,,,   you see it in a couple of the pics  ....   other side, is a little bit of pipe, fits over the stock chevy tube, just unbolt the little cover, slide the crank in, and you're in business.   And .....  oh, anybody worried, there's always a 7/16" wrench on the truck.
Reply:That's purdy nifty with the storage.  I have built air bumpers with fittings in both ends out of some 4 x 4 x 1/4" tube.   I should have some more pics today.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools

Reply:Whenever you don't have the right equiptment bondo is a must.  I can get it close but its hard to get 10ga. smoothed out using a torch     Now if I had a set of rolls it would be different.    And you're right about the black DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:Nice fit up and I must commend you on the final touches as I would have just rolled it with Hurculiner(sp) to cover flaws. Thanks for the write up.

Reply:I've been thinking of making a front steel bumper for my 2002 4runner for a while......and I think this thread is really inspiring me to do so. Just wondering what the total cost and amount of steel was used on the bumper?

Reply:Well....I assumed you had the metal lying around...but what would you think it would cost if someone went out to a supplier and tried to source all the needed pieces? Sory for being a pita...just trying to see if its worth the money and time to do it myself or just buy a pre made arb or the like....

Reply:And after painting and mounting it on the truck there are a few things I would've changed.  I would've made the corners not stick out as far and slanted the corners back the opposite way.  Also I still have to space the bumper down about 1/8" because it drawed just enough when I welded it that the tailgate will hit now, that's an easy fix though.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:Super job Dewayne. I love the design and attention to detailMiller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:Well the curves and such were an added difficulty factor you dealt with very well. Then the black like you say. Shiny black almost calls people over to look. Tiny bug you can't see in the air shows up all of a sudden when it's in the paint. Great work.
Reply:Finally took the time to post the final pics.  I wish the paint would've come out better but it was some old cheap paint I had laying around the shop that I needed to use up anyway.  I think it looks a little to big for the truck but it's fine with me.  It's already dirty as hell anyway.Last edited by littlefuzz; 08-19-2008 at 07:50 AM.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:Ummm, where are the license plate (tag) lights?Yeah, shiny black paint shows everything.  Block sand it, and/or spray some matte black onto it.Or get some road grime, dust, and dirt onto it and no one will be able to tell.    Clipping another big rock in the field is optional.Proportions look nice, the curves came out pretty well.  Good job.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:Is it just me or do I detect a little disapointment in your voice in a couple of your posts after building an absolutely awesome bumper?!A friend once told me when I was doing the 'if I did it again' thing and coming across as being disapointed with my results that if we can't stand back and look at a job when we're done and envision doing something different or better then we've reached the point of being unwilling to improve and learn from our experiences.Nice job and now lets see one for the front!MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
