So after reading on here how good the 6010 is for just about everything from tacks to roots I went looking for some to try.My brother got some a while back when he was building a pipe fence with old pipe and said they were the bomb.Went to local AirGas welding supply and got some Radnor e6010 rods in 5/32 and 1/8 only place I could find them.I have not been able to get the 1/8 to run a bead or even get a good tack. Acts like amps is too low, strikes right off but I can’t keep them lit for anything. Been from 75 to 150 with no luck getting these to do anything other than stick or melt.I haven’t tried the 5/32, but I did pull out some of my 6013 & 7018 in 1/8 and had no problem with them. (i'm not a pro but i can weld)Am I missing something with the 6010's or did I maybe get some old/bad rods?
Reply:Its your machine.......what are you using?QamuIs Heg qaq law' lorvIs yInqaq puS
Reply:how could it be my machine? it welds everything else just fine.i mostly weld 1/8" to 1/4" stuff all the time and some 1/2" to 3/4" at times with 6013 and 7018. my lincoln ac225 welds anything i've tried...except the 6010's
Reply:Because 6010's are DC ONLY. AC won't do it no matter how hard you try or how long you try it. Just from the way you described it, I already knew you were using AC.QamuIs Heg qaq law' lorvIs yInqaq puS
Reply:IMO, 6010 is not the versitile job rod like 7018 is. 6010 shines for jobs like pipe roots (like your friend said) due to the deep penitration of 6010. 7018 is my go to rod for the majority of carbon steel jobs. 6010 is not the most aesthetic pleasing looking weld bead.6010 is a DC only rod. My preference for 6010 is Lincoln 5P+JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:If you are looking for a rod that will work with your 225 try some of the E6011, it is in the same family of rods as the E6010 but has additives in the coating to stabilize the arc and allow for it's use on an AC machine. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:ok then, now i see how it's my machine...no dc  would of been nice to of known that before i got the rods. i guess that means i need to get another welder that will make 4.  been wanting an ac/dc for a while just couldn't justify needing one...now i got the rods for it i guess i do need it.
Reply:It would be far more economical for you to just go buy a box of 6011 rods (the AC version of 6010). Your AC225 will run 6011 well.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Agreed, try it with some 6011.  No need to buy another machine.  Of course, one can never have too many tools...  MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:I like 6011 a lot for AC or DCEP.Last edited by Kelvin; 09-30-2010 at 04:32 AM.Reason: wrong thread
Reply:If it bothers you having an extra box of welding rods around just send them here, I'll give them a good home, one rod at a time!
Reply:I never had a problem restarting 6010 till yesterday when I went to another facility to test. Them sons of bitches wouldn't restart for anything. I literally use a new rod for every tack. Talk about a waste!
Reply:6010 is only for roots (and thats only cuze of a 50 year old procedure) and farmers

Reply:6010 is a fine rod for many thingsLast edited by slim83; 10-01-2010 at 10:26 PM.
Reply:Right on c6.7.  I'm fixing to start a DCP job next week that is 5p + all the way out. I've seen a lot of ill advice on WW lately
Reply:6010 is the code rod for roots in pressure pipe in many places. It's also great for virticle down, up and overhead welding applications.7014 is what I call the farmers rod.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:The old 6010 red rods were the best, they had asbestos in them and were removed from the market. Worked great on rusty wet surfaces in the oil fields. If you dampen the new 6010's before putting in the root on pipe it will make it run a little smoother! an illegal trick but it works!
Reply:I love welding with 6010. Great for out of position. I have never used 6011. At least not that I can remember. How does it compare to 6010? In some other threads guys say they use 6011 and I know they're running DC welders. I know it will run on DC, I just always thought a 6010 was a better rod for DCgiving better results."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:6010 the best.6011 the best.6013 the best.7018 the best.No that is not the way I would look at it.All of these rods have been around for a loooong time.It is just that you and others start to discover them as you get more welding experience. Not much talk about the 6013 at all and just 10 years ago it was very popular because it ws an all position rod. Medium penetration, and medium deposit. More deposit that the 6010 or 6011. But wire feed orMIG allowed the 6013 to be forgotten.IT is a general purpose all around rod for many projects. You do not need 7018 to build a barbeque grill. It is over kill. The 6010 used to be the grandfather rod of shipping. The 6010 used to be called (not the farmers rod ),but it was called the "MANURE" rod because it would cut through the Sh@#$ on a horse trailer, or farm equipment.Makes me laugh when I hear the younger guys say farmers rod.Politically cleaned up terms I guess. The bottom line is that there are many different electrodes and since you do not see the POCKET WELDING GUIDES in the welding supply stores or the big box stores many younger welders just make a selection of electrode by what a friend told them or some internet site suggested. But the right way is to look up the chart of electrodes and select the right one for the base metal you are welding and the type of project.BTW if you are looking at a chart some will tell you the rod is dc or ac preferred.Northern tool is one company that now offers a beginning welding booklet along with their selection of welding goods.Almost none of the welding stores have pocket welding guides anymore. A real shame. That is why there is such a lack of knowledge about these stick welding electrodes. Most people buy a wire feed machine and it comes with a spool of wire already on it.They do not even ask what is the wire on this machine for? Right?BTW..When you check out some of the pocket welding guides some of them even describe HOW to run the rod. Like whipping motion, or straight drag or proper angle. Many routine questions could be answered with a simple pocket welding guide. There is always a proper welding electrode for each project and each base material. You need to know that before doing any welding project. So when someone says "I like this rod" ask them why. IF they say it is because it is smooth and easy to light, that is meaningless.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 03-28-2011 at 09:52 AM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
