Learned a lot from everybody on this site..  I'm a part time fab'er.. Needed a toothbar to help with some projects around the house/farm.. As always, feedback appreciated..  Learn something new everytime I am here.. Attached Images
Reply:Very nice work.  Looks like a clean job.  How thick is that flat bar?  I would think a piece of angle would hold up a bit better as the pressure of the teeth might pry up and bend the flat bar.  I like the job, just some constructive criticism for the future.   Last edited by Hammack_Welding; 08-26-2008 at 09:37 PM.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:very professional!
Reply:How about bolting thru the flat, and bucket.  Bolt between every tooth in a place you figure will take the most torque as the teeth try to move up and down.  Cause' I'm thinkin' they're gonna try to move and twist the flat. The bolt heads shouldn't cause much interferance with material flow into, and out of , the bucket.I hate all you John Deere guys, y'all got all the money.  I can't afford that green paint.
Reply:OOPS !!!I just looked at the pics again.  I just noticed the tang you welded to each tooth that goes under the bucket.  They ought to go a long ways in keeping the teeth from lifting, but I'd still worry about when the teeth try twist downwards.I'm bettin' the farm on the bolts.
Reply:I don't understand Tigging it. Do you just like to Tig weld? You could have done the job a whole lot faster with 7018 and would have looked and held just as good. Didn't know, just asking.
Reply:Nice job! When I looked back at the first picture I realized how big those teeth are! I have been thinking of building one for my small bucket, but I think I can buy one cheaper, around $250.00 for 54". How do you think you made out?  Also does it work as well as you had hoped?  I have a small skid steer which has a hard time digging in to packed soil.Last edited by GLwelder; 08-26-2008 at 10:56 PM.
Reply:I'd guess the parts the teeth fit onto are steel forgings, made for the purpose and which fit the bucket lip pretty tightly. In most cases, the tooth holder gets welded directly to the bucket. In the first picture, the rod pieces on the table look to me like standard coated electrode, but so does the rod in the left hand, and the right clearly holds a TIG torch.  Are looks deceiving?
Reply:Looks good. I recently made one for my CASE skidsteer. It was a lot of work, but well worth it. My shop built one is much better than the store bought one it replaced. What is the flat bar.....plain MS, a cutting edge or ????? Mine old and new were cutting edges. The new one is 3/4x 6" 1080.QamuIs Heg qaq law' lorvIs yInqaq puS
Reply:The flatbar is 1/2" thick by 4" wide MS  with a 45 bevel on the front from the hand grinder to give it a small cutting edge.  The ends with the slots are 1/2" inch also, and the two pieces on the outside of the bucket are 3/8"x3x3 with a 5/8" grade 8 bolt.  The teeth are series 24 cast steel, and the shanks are also cast steel that I picked up from a local JD store..  The shanks do overlap the front cutting edge underneath so I don't think I will get any bend on the 1/2" bar.. My tractor isn't that big, so I will probably break something else before the toothbar gives..  The slots let the toothbar pull forward and flip up so I can use the bucket smooth edge without completely removing toothbar.  I used 7018 to weld the two end pieces to the flat bar, and shanks to the bar.. Tig'd the backside where things met on the ends just to add some extra support, and tig'd the 3x3 plates on the outside of the bucket..  Wife showed up with the camera and told me to hold still she wanted a picture, that's why torch in one hand and 7018 in the other (grabbed what was close by)... I have a pile of rocks, and two mounds of dirt to try it on this weekend..
Reply:Wow, that has to be a really nice farm implement! Congrats on your build!Lincoln Ranger 250Lincoln LN-25 Across-The-Arc FeederMobile Unit / Workshop (drill press, air, welding, horiz bandsaw...)[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
Reply:hloy heck , tiggin a farm implement , its unheard of where i come from , all we use is 16tc rods on a big old stick , or if its nice well use the mig ,
Reply:Looks nice. Wouldn't work on the ones I build stuff for, but they can tear up an anvil. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
