Yesterday I put a new platform on the roof of a building, outside of the little room for the elevator equipment. the general contractor ripped out the old one and anchored the channel to the wall then let me at it. The platform needed to be bigger than the old one because new elevator "motors" or whatever they are called are being installed. The platform needed to be big and heavy enough to allow dollys to be loaded on the platform then rolled into the room.A four foot wide door will replace this old one. This was an average ho-hum project, "Real world" like David says  So I just took one picture to show the platform, so you guys would know what the hell I was talking about, They used "weld through" primer and told me to weld through it. I'm glad there was a good breeze up there, 9 stories up. The fumes were nasty. The picture does not show the deck, or the railings, the railing had to be removable so they could crane large objects onto it.Overall, kinda a lousy post  Everything I have been doing lately has been pretty mundane, I just thought some of the related pictures would be of interest. We like our pictures around here. Two are of the skyline, you can barely see Lake Michigan, it was real humid. The other picture is the staircase from hell. All the steel rode the freight elevator with me, then I carried it across the 8th floor, and then up these steps. The crane wasn't there yet, and Im told I need the exercise. I used our Miller Maxstar on a 110 outlet in the elevator room with 3/32 7018, sure beats droppin a rope to the parking lot and hauling up leads Attached ImagesLast edited by Burnit; 09-03-2008 at 09:47 PM.Yup

Reply:I take it from the weld through primer statement that the pieces were pre-fabbed and pretty much ready for final fitting and weld up which is not intended to imply it was just a simple job.I hope you had some help hauling all that steel up those stairs! Thanks for the post.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Originally Posted by BurnitI pre-fabbed all the pieces at our shop and they primed them. One of our guys measured and qouted the job and provided me with a drawing, it should have been simple but his drawing and measurements were way off, the legs were extended about 10 inches. The roof IS sloped, I asked a million times!  and the flashing between the wall and the roof had about a 1 foot radius. So the stairs moved, the stringer got extended on one side to deal with the slope and the railing next to the stairs had to be narrowed.I didn't have help carrying the material, it was a mofo.I wasn't a happy camper by the end of the day, thus the lack of pictures.Carrying the material is one thing, I don't care about that, I like stupid heavy work sometimes, its good for ya. But having to rework parts to the extent I did because of a lack of effort on someone else's part really pisses me off.But whatever.........I wasnt gonna complain in my original post Duane, but you asked

Reply:Looking at those stairs, and the thought of humpin' all of that iron up to the roof, makes my knees hurt.Saw the problem with the supports when I first looked earlier this evening.  Lead guy didn't do too good of a job measuring, or even looking.  Ain't no such thing as a flat roof.  Even a "flat" roof has to have a slope for drainage.  Used to do flatwork.  Slope was 1/8 in 10, or 1/8 per running foot if I remember (been a while)' but it did have a definite slope.  Gives you personal satisfaction to correct the flaws, but not a damn person notices it.  It's a  shame. It's what seperates the professionals from us daubers."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:No pics of the welds?  How many amps?  Were you plugged into 110?I like my little lincoln V155-S.  Its been in the shop for 2 weeks and I MISS IT.  Its perfect for jobs like that.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Measure twice, cut (or weld) once! The measurer, didn't.  I never like welding through or near paint.  There's -always- a heat damaged 'zone' from the welding heat.  Which means you (or someone) has to wire wheel off the scorched paint (or should!), and then clean it and repaint (prime and then top coat).  So the part was painted once, then wire brushed and cleaned, and then painted again. That and scorched paint from welding heat smells BAD.  Uggg.Oh, and is that platform supported on those leg pads/plates which are resting on -top- of the roofing gravel?    The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...

Reply:MSOE - Milwaukee School Of Engineering aka Milwaukees Sexually Opressed Engineers.I went there for a year, 7 guys to 1 girl (hence the second name), and 14 guys to 1 girl in the freshman class when I was there. It is suppose to be a very good school but was just not my cup of tea. BTW - nice work, sounds like it was a blast, gotta love stuff that goes like that, where everything does not work the way it was intended.OwnerDW Metalworks LLCMiller Trailblazer 302Miller 8RC FeederMiller Passport PlusMiller Dynasty 200 DX W/Coolmate 1Hobart Handler 135Hypertherm PowerMAX 30Smith O/A Torch SetPlus much much more
