Do any of you guys know of a good source of technical information on hard facing with Stellite alloys?  I tried the mfg website but couldn't find any answers to even the most general questions.  Thanks,Ed
Reply:There are a ton of stellite products out there. If you have something in mind you can ask your local LWS for a contact at Deloro-Stellite, Wall Colmonoy or Stoody for specs and use.Make sure your asking about Cobalt-Chrome alloy as Stoody has more than one alloy12 & 21 for instance, and one is iron based the other is cobalt.Wall Colmony is the last of the old school originals, not bought out by someone at this, a good old michigan company.Matt
Reply:The original manufacturer is Deloro Stellite. Quite a few years ago when the cobalt mines in Africa were shut down, Stoody came out with their product called Stoodite. (if it was available before this,my supplier had never come across it) I believe that Stoody has more information available, but I haven't purchased any for a long time. If you check there websites, you should be able to compare the two products. I have used both of their #12 bare rod with oxyaceetylene and TIG, and found them to perform the same. The SMAW is another option, but leaves a softer deposit if being applied to carbon steel. If you are looking for a hard face that doesn't soften when heated, or that will hold an edge, it is a good choice, but it isn't the hardest overlay available. One feature that I like, is that if proper procedures are followed, it can be stacked higher than any other product that I have ever come across.
