Reply:Titanium? we were shown a peice of that stuff welded at our local welding class and apparently they said the rainbow color meant it had been contaminated, still very nice work.

Reply:Btw, what is a 05 YFZ?
Reply:Bad A$S!! What does something like that sell for?
Reply:Very Nice!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Originally Posted by WelderBoyYes and no. The color is only a very minimal surface oxidizing from either traveling too fast and or not having the proper shielding gas coverage post welding. That happens after the puddle has solidified and the gas is pulled away too quick and the hot solidified steel reacts with the atmosphere. On a space shuttle or aircraft the risk isn't worth it. On pretty much anything else, that weld will have the same structural integrity as one that had proper shielding gas coverage.
Reply:I got to play with some titanium the other day. It's pretty nice to weld. They were shaft extensions for a backpack drill. The customer wanted a brushed finish so I stuck it in our finish sander and what a show! The sparks were so white that you were blinded and it kicked the dimond belt off and destroyed it. We decided that it didn't need a nice finish afterall.I had to run very short welds because I didn't have the gas coverage that ti requires. If I do more of them, I'll have to pick up one of those 2" cones for the torch.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:Brooks, I'd really like to know more about your project and Ti expirience. I am reseaching snowmobile A-arms and some rear skid parts to do. Thing is trying to determine the wall thickness to use in Ti or if I have to 4130. The Stock MS is .120-1" to .0930 on different parts. I was trying to figure out how thin I could go. And still keep the integrety I need for straightline drag racing. Ice Asphalt and grass drags. One more question......3800.00 because the material is soo expensive or the time and skill for your services. Just seems really expensive, but i have not bought any Ti stock yet, just aftermarket parts like the springs we use on the suspension and clutches. Reply:http://www.arcticcat.com/snow/sled.asp?id=840Try this link until I get more pics. If you goto the M1000 sled mountain, or the F1000 sleds you can see the front ski A-arms and then the rear suspension skid parts. Anything tubular. Obviously weight is our goal to save. So i am not sure on the weight savings between 4130 and Ti. I do know that -for i-ce and- grass -drags -our Ti studs and ice pics are exactly half the weight of normal carbide or hardeneed steel studs. Now if I can use .070 4130 to replace the .120 MS then I can't imagine Ti in .070 would be much lighter, yes?- no? In drag racing the front suspension never touches the ground until the finishline. And the rear skid sees no more than 2" of travel and usually its about 5/8" 90% of the time at launch only.http://www.fastpixs.com/cgi-bin/stor...d_Sleds&img=12Also try this link page 2 and 3 the only green arctic cat sled. those are 4130 front arms but they dont match the stock shape and configuration, so not leagal in all sanctioning bodies or classes. That particular sled is a 2003 F7 firecat. i will try to get my own close up pics or the parts in the shop.I noticed you use plenty of filler but the books and charts I been reading say to just fuse with anything less than 1/16th thick. Very nice welds by the way. Why no Ti ???? Reply:these are pretty similar to our drag quadsYou could get away with the lower being 1.000 by .065 and (the upper .875 by .049) thats 4130Ti. lower 1.000 by .070 (uppers 1.000 by.070)for the rear I need to see better picsStrive For PerfectionHow much do one of those YFZ swingers weigh compared to stock?
