I have heard the expression "walking the cup" referring to tig welding but i dont know what it actually means. Please explain. Thanks,Aaron
Reply:I recently asked the same thing. As I understand it, its actual contact, cup to work, and then with a zig- zagging motion that would look like a continous ZZZZ you work your way down the weld seam. I am NOT a tig weldor, having maybe an hour hood time my whole life.(51) There is someone here that knows, I'll betcha'
Reply:Tek has it pretty right, but it's more of  semi circle with the wrist and a fairly 'large' motion. Don't know just how to explain it   But once you see it you'll know what it is.Stephen
Reply:One of our members, Gaustin, has a website that explains it in detail.http://www.weldinginspectionsvcs.com/WalkingTheCup.htmSmithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Finally made a video of some cup walking. May help shed some light on things. These are about 1/2 MB each so may take a little time to load. I didn't have anyone to hold the camera so I had to rig it up on the pipe and it was a little difficult to work around.http://www.weldinginspectionsvcs.com...gTheCupVid.htmHave a nice dayhttp://www.weldingdata.com/
Reply:i call it stitch welding  ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Is this technique designed for welding without filler rods???  If so, what is its main purpose or use.Michael
Reply:you can only weld (fuse) stainless with no filler...so i guess thats what we're seeing..i guess...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Can someone repost the videos?
Reply:Zap, you mean to tell me when we were tig'n those ss hydraulic pipes, my welders weren't using tig wire. i coulda swore they were laying a root and a hot pass with em. or did ya mean something else by that last statement."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
Reply:Mich, Walking the cup while TIG welding is used both with and without filler wire. Without filler wire it is used to make a fusion pass or bead, or to dry wash a pass, to make it more uniform. With filler wire it is used to make a root, filler and cap pass, or in other words, the entire weld.Once you learn how to "walk the cup" your beads will look more uniform and even, than doing it freehand. Basically, on the cap, it's for appearance purposes, but I've made many x-ray quality welds for years, using this method and after you learn, you won't want to use freehand anymore. I used to freehand, when first starting out, then I was quickly showed the "walking the cup" method and have used it since. During the 70's and 80's, while working in the nuclear power plants, this was about the only way that inspectors would allow and pass welds to be made on pipe, when doing TIG.It's very hard to freehand a TIG weld and make it look as uniform as one that was done by "walking the cup" unless you are one of the lucky few, and I mean VERY few, that has that steady of a hand.I'm sure that there are others that only freehand, but since using the 'walking the cup' method, I have found that, over the past 30 years of welding, this is the easiest and fastest way for me to make a good quality uniform weld, that will easily pass an x-ray test. There's other ways, but this method has worked BEST for me.Last edited by Diverbill45; 07-21-2006 at 02:53 PM.
Reply:It looks very awkward and difficult... I wish we could see the videos
Reply:I just checked the videos. They seem fine. The one without the ARC doesn't have filler metal only because it would be difficult to walk OVER the unmelted rod. BUT autogenous welding (Without Filler Metal) is done on thin materials with fine success.Have a nice dayhttp://www.weldingdata.com/
Reply:Jon KYou have to use Explorer. They won't work in Fox Fire.

Reply:Originally Posted by RojodiabloNo, it's just that stainless and Ti are for whatever reason the two materials best suited to weld without using a filler rod. For Ti it is said to be a  but it works out well. SS is one material that actually likes just fusing itself to another ss part. On a boat railing, the less filler, the prettier the weld. I did not say better weld. It is just that in apperance welding, SS allows some very tiny welds that actually hold. Regular steel will look good, but will tend to crack easily if there is no filler rod added.
