Hi there ,This is my first post to the forum and I want to present my best.I am writing from Istanbul and dreaming a steel or aluminum boat more than half of my age. Lets say 25 years.I went to a welding course and got a ASME certificate from related subject but I found welding is a very very difficult and wonderful art.Than I saw at tv , someone from Soviet Army at Afghanistan repairing their tanks with disposable welding torches , which 10 inches long tube , burning one end and someone moving it with regular movements and welding repairing the crack .I want to ask , do that stuff usable for boat building and who sells similar products ?Thank you ,Mustafa Umut SaracIstanbul
Reply:It's purely for emergency repair and similar products are still available, but I forget the name since they are useless for fabrication. They would not be at all suitable for boatbuilding, but the forums on the site below should be of great use to you in your quest. The are a fine resource well worth your study.http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/boat-building/Building a boat may easily be more expensive than buying one. Do it for what you will learn, and consider working for a boat builder to learn the craft. I'm not a boater myself, just interested in the technology.
Reply:Hi Mustapha,It is thermite; see at  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermite. Very dangerous stuff, we used it for roughly cutting in shipyards. I am a retired naval engineer, so I think I have some knowledge about boats and ships. No hope to use it for welding a boat. A good MIG or even a simple DC arc welder on steel will give far better results, at lower price and less dangerously...Boat building is long term task, and pretty expensive with thousands of work hours even in a small boat. Many times a used boat is a better alternative as said farmall...Wood  is often a better material for small boats under 40 feet (12 meters) than steel or alu. You are lucky; there are some wood shipyards in Turkey and you can get very good boats in traditional wood at excellent price. Boatdesign.net is a source to take with prudence, as there are some false experts polluting this forum.Read before some good books on boatbuilding before deciding: your question about thermite shows that you have to acquire more knowledge on this subject.Feel free to ask me. Have a nice day.Last edited by Don Pablo; 04-30-2011 at 01:50 AM.
