I got these mufflers the other day and the welds seemed very dark. almost black. The light in the picture is a tad misleading. They are about the color of dark charcoal grey. Is this normal?
Reply:Just looks like whoever welded them may not have wire brushed them afterwards. If you take a wire brush to them, or use a power wire wheel, it should take the thin layer of oxidation away. Try it."Real power is an arcair hand torch with a piece of 3/4 inch carbon and 1500 amps. You feel like Zeus throwing a lightning bolt."
Reply:or if its stainless the person who welded them may have ran a little too hot.
Reply:Looks like galvanized steel and the welds are fine (it's a muffler. It muffles.). Scrape the spatter off and spraybomb it with aluminum colored paint. If you really want to get technical, you could even sand the high spots down. I suppose you could spray the thing down with cold galvanized compound, but that stuff comes out a dull grey and the aluminum paint is a way better match. No sense powerbuffing a hardwire weld, it just makes it shiny. My two cents, for what it is worth.Last edited by mb_welder; 05-01-2011 at 10:15 PM.
Reply:Either galvanized or aluminized sheet metal muffler.... to be expected.
Reply:I'm sure they were fine, i just hadn't seen ones that dark before. I'll try wiring them before I paint them though.thanks guys. |
