need to build up a edge on a cast iron wheel rod i bought is a 3/32 nickel 55 for castit says preheat is mandatory to 700 to 800 degrees how do you do this?
Reply:the grill when the wife isn't home.
Reply:Cast Iron has to be pre heated and also cooled slowly. an oven on the clean cycle or broil should get it pretty hot . Cast Iron is a pain to weldTiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. Reply:gas or charcoal grill if it will fit, Large rosebud tip on a large torch if it wont, Could also dig a shallow pit and fill with charcoal to make a large "oven" to pre-heat it.
Reply:Two ways to weld cast iron...preheat / weld / postheat / slow coolor...no preheat / short weld / allow to cool / short weld / allow to cool etc.
Reply:I agree with Old Skool...keep it hot, or keep it cold. If it's just a little build up on the outside of a wheel(no crack repairs, etc.), I would go with cold.
Reply:A pic would help- but a corner or edge of a casting usually can be welded with no pre/post heat.PeterEquipment:2 old paws2 eyes (that don't look so good)1 bad back |
