"Yes Ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket".  (Copyright- Tangledriver)Tacking the uprights on my new tree bucker the other day, and I ran into a little problem.  My fitup wasn't right on.  Had a gap on one side of a piece of square tubing that caused the piece to pull out of square when it was tacked.  Another shrinkage problem.  The tack wants to close the gap when it cools.Grind the tack weld out with a razor wheel, and go get the trusty screwdriver.  Not any screwdriver,  A Craftsman.  Has to be a Craftsman, or it won't work.Pop that little gem in there and give it a tap to hold it tight.  Now I ain't talkin' a 5lb sledge  Just enough to hold it and put a strain on the joint.Re-tack, and pat yourself on the back for bein' such an innovative good ol' boy.  Or maybe be a little more careful with the grinder next timeNote to self:  When finish welding this particular joint, make sure to weld the other 3 sides first in order to lock it in place.  Use preheat to slow cooling, and prevent final weld from cracking when it tries to close the gap, or pulling.  It works. Now, that's about it.  This slow 4.8k connection is killing me, and I'm fast runnin' out of beer  Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:"Craftsman tools give ya warts"Does it ever rain in your workshop?David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I always preferred Proto over Craftsman.  Main reason the company I worked for bought Proto tools and the roustabout crews would break the handles of the screwdrivers. I would gather them up, finish breaking the rest of the handle off and keep them for wedges. Had a whole bunch of them in my tool box in different sizes. I still have several. Not trying to hijack your thread but I used to repair a LOT of leaks in waterflood systems. I bought small, cheap tapered punches by the handfull.Get a leak you couldn't stop water from running out of, just drive a punch in it and weld around it. Cut it off with a torch or grinder, weld over it real good with 7018 and turn the water back on. Save the stub, you might have a larger leak tomorrow.
Reply:Craftsman all the way... too poor for crap-on toolsSam?  When you gonna be done with that thang?   and BTW  are those Maryland cows? they sure look like it weld it like you own it

Reply:Thats a good trick to know, and I know what you mean about the fires that magically start that you can smell but cant find until they are raging infernos.

Reply:Originally Posted by duaneb55That's good news!  But then it should be working better due to the shorter, bigger leads.  I take it your settings are more what you were used to with the old unit?
Reply:BIG APOLOGY.  Should have been Copyright.. JoeH, not Tangledriver.  One of these days I'll get my act together"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
