I got this bit today.  It looks like  it was only used a couple of times before it broke.I took my 4.5" grinder and had my way with it.  This is the only way I could figure out how to get it straight.  Tig Tack, no filler.I checked it for straight in the chuck using the beam as a reference. Reply:My original plan was to pulsed spray weld it, but since I had the tig running, I just used that. After the small tacks, I made 2 bigger ones then made a pass all the way around.Arcmaster on 185, Mostly 3/32 E70S-6 filler.  I tried some 1/8 filler, but it was too big. I made 6 or 7 passes.  3/32 tungsten, #8 gas cup 15+ CFH  The wind was coming in from my left.  It aint too pretty, but It aint gonna break again.First pass. I kept a keyhole as much as I could.Towards the end, the fan in the arcmaster was running on HI all the time.  I used most of the pedal.Last edited by David R; 10-27-2008 at 07:27 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:The auger will twist off before your weld breaksNow, ya really wanna see ugly??  I decided to make the forks on this thing I'm  building now one foot longer after I already cut the steel  Another one of my afterthoughts  Had to splice on another foot of tubing3/16 wall tubing, beveled and one pass in the bevel, a bead on each side of original weld, then a bridge between the 2 outer beads.  I've done it this way for years, and none have ever broken, but it ain't pretty to look atGo ahead and laugh, I can probably hear it from here Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:FARMERSAMM   a little buffing and them there welds will shine like a alum beer can.
Reply:DAVIDR  i take it that the speed is controlled by a foot pedal? if so do you get confused at times and push the wrong pedal?

Reply:Nice post David R.I'm surprised how thin the tube looks. Is it only about 3/16 wall, or is that an illusion?I have about the same job waiting for me to get around to; that auger tube is at least 1/2" wall.I never thought about the true-up, it could be tricky.Good Luck
