A customer brought this one in.  It had a nail in the machine.  It cut a slice right around the drum.  Here it is set up in the positioner.I bought this perforated stuff at NAPA.  It wasn't cheap , but sure fit the bill.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:One piece inside and one piece outside.  I plug welded every 4th hole on both sides. This is as far as I got with the TIG.  The new stuff is galvanized. I did the rest with the SP100 .023 wire, C/25 on E4 or something like that.Outside of drum. The customer saw it today, he was happy with the job.  I'm going to hit it with a wire wheel to smooth out any sharp  edges.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Nice job David R,Good ingenuity with the rolling wheel support system you came up with. I would think to cut through the drum like that would have taken more that a few loads of clothes and would have made a lot of racket.I however, would keep an eye out for an irate housewife.  You may have foiled her scheme to get a new dryer!
Reply:Great repair job!    Cooler still was the use of the shop seat as support!  How many ton/hours of tumbling clothes would you guess it takes to wear the zinc coating off the inside of the drum??- MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:I had a dryer drum do the exact same thing looked the same too BUT! it was where the belt road around the drum and wore it out, hope he gave u the true story cause if it is where the belt wore it through can't see the belt staying on that spot now. could be different tho. good luck.
Reply:Real World Weldin'  Clever set-up.I can't imagine how a nail stayed aligned like that; long enough to wear through. Something would have to keep feeding the nail (like a motor brush), or it would have worn off before the drum cut through.  I like the belt theory. 9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Reply:I figure it's probably an industrial dryer and drive will be on the shaft that was in the positioner.Great repair David, good idea on the punched strip too. An ideal material for the repair. If it is an industrial dryer, that might explain no-one "noticing" the grinding noise as it wore itself to death."One of the things we have to be thankful for is that we don't get as much government as we pay for." Reply:The job took just over an hour.I looked at the job last year and the owner of the laundry mat wanted me to fix it in the machine.  I said no thank you.  I needed to access both sides and I really didn't want to burn the place down.It was a nail, I saw it wedged into the machine.  Now that I look at it here, I could have got more for the job, how much do you think a new drum costs?  Thanks for the compliments.Got some bigger more glamorous jobs coming up....David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Just another great use for 'plumbers tape' (that perforated stuff from NAPA).  Joe the Plumber would be proud! And your use of the mechanic's seat as support rollers is another example of how your ingenuity never ceases to impress.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:That perforated strap looks just like perforated plumber or HVAC pipe/duct hanger strap.  Last I remember it's kind of soft and thin, flexible but fatigues pretty easily (you can break the strap by bending it back and forth on itself a dozen or so times) and has a thin galvanized coating (thicker than the typical 'bright' zinc on a plain zinc-coated screw/bolt/nail but nowhere as thick as a hot-dipped galvanized coating).  NAPA probably has it as muffler-hanger strap.Ingenious use of the caster on the upside-down shop creeper as roller supports for the drum as you spun it with the positioner.  I guess you and/or the laundramat owner will have to see how the strap and the welds hold up to the heat and wet regarding rusting.  Rust stains on clothes would not be good.  And yes on smoothing out the edges/welds/etc.  Not everything that goes in the dryer would be heavy/stiff cotton canvas/duck/denim.  Some thinner cloth could more easily snag or catch on things.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:Nice job David.  Good solution with the plumbers tape inside and out.  Very cleaver fixturing to alighn and rotate the drum.  I think the repair should hold up just fine.  Maybe a strap of stainless on the outside would have been more robust.  Thanks for sharing.

Reply:Originally Posted by STwelderConcrete nail I assume?I love your "positioner".Ever work on a cotton picker? I'll throw this story in because it's funny. I worked at a local welding shop for a year before going out on my own long, long ago and late one afternoon a customer brought in a Farmall cotton picker and wanted some wore out guards cut out so he could replace them. I got picked for the job. Asked the boss, "What about the lint"? 'It will be OK" was the reply. The thing was packed with lint. I have asthma so I went back and told the boss he would have to send me to the hospital for help after I worked on the machine because I wouldn't be able to breathe. He sent another welder. In a few minutes the other welder came back and the conservation went like this. "Boss, give me five dollars. What do you want five dollars for? Well, I want to go buy some wienies so we can have a weinie roast while that picker burns up". The fire dept. got the fire out but it cost $10,000 to repair the machine. This was in 1968. The shop's insurance did pay the bill.
