I have a 8" gas powered post hole auger and the cutting cutting edges are starting to show some wear. I was planning on just using some min prep 6011 rods to build it up and grind a edge and call it done, but my genetic inability to to do anything the easy way makes me think I might want to try hardfacing them. The cutting edges are only 2"x4"x1/4". Is there any benefit to hardfacing something that small other then the experience of trying somthing new?
Reply:your using smaw correct?i'd say hardfacing rods is the way to go..but welding on a spiral shaft can be testy......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Zapster, I was looking at my snow blower blades and wondering if I could re face them. I have MIG and a torch set. Can I just add some material with my wire feeder to build up the leading edges of the augers or not. I was thinking if I pre heated the augers I could just add a fast bead. What are your thoughts?snoboy
Reply:we do alot of hardfacing. everything has be hardfaced about once a month. except the loaders and trackhoes. they can go about 3 months. the rotor that does the crushing takes serious abuse. we have to preheat to 250 as per oem. this really helps relieve the cracking. you can take lunch after hardfacing the loader and the welds will still be cracking. we don't preheat buckets, because the cracking actually helps by grabbing the asphalt and concrete and helping shield the bucket. like zap says. welding the spiral will be tricky. but if you weld the leading face and the bottom and top edge, that edge will outlast the machine. i love hardfacing rods. they lay down the most beautiful welds ever. and the slag just rolls up behind the weld. just don't let someone use them for anything but hardfacing, they have no strength. there is also a liquid hardface, but from what i read it is expensive. good luck."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
