Here is how the grill conversion turned out. I finished late this afternoon . After some thought I decided to leave the original smokestack where it was so it could be still be used as a grill. To smoke just close the damper on the original stack and open the new one and build your fire in the lower box. Paint? My son-in- law is going to use it. If he wants it painted, he can paint it.  It was a pretty cheap deal. I had everything I used in the scrap pile or left over from some job. I didn't spend a penny. Even the gas in the Ranger 250 is over 2 years old.I have it hanging in the air ready to haul down to the son-in-law. That little Kubota is HANDY.
Reply:That is nice.  It's gonna outlast all of us here tonight. The legs turned out nice.  Was the last grill, before the modification, set up with the same kind of legs?  What I like is that they can sit on soft ground, not like 4 independant legs that have a tendancy to sink.  The 2 large cross pipes ought to provide a lot of flotation if the ground gets soggy.A loader is one of the handiest things on the planet.  I personally wouldn't want to move a 300lb.(?, or pretty close) grill by muscle only.I just now noticed the lock box on the container.  It looks like the one on mine.  A hasp up inside that you slip the padlock thru that is as near boltcutter proof as you can get.  Like everything else, an SOB who really wants in will get in, but it's gonna take a torch.  My lock is attached to the round deals that join top and bottom closing cams. They better invite ya over for the first fire upIt was worth the few grass firesLast edited by farmersamm; 11-13-2008 at 10:16 PM.Reason: about lock, cams, last sentence"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:That is a good looking configuration, Oltimer! Is there a control for fresh air comming in at the bottom, or do you just rely on the smok out damper to control the flow?I've grilled a log of burgers and steaks, and some fish, but never go into smoking.  Perhaps next summer will see me smokin' beef!-MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.

Reply:Samm, those are new legs. It originally sat on a small pump skid that I salvaged but it wasn't long enough once the cooker doubled in length. Notice the tapered ends in front so you won't hang your toe on them. The box on the container has a big American lock in it when I leave for a few days. It is about bolt cutter proof. The cutting torch goes in the container when I go out of town so any thief will have to supply his own.\With all the things you have built you wouldn't have a problem building one at all. Some of the material I used might be a problem to find in your part of the world. The oilfield has all kinds of handy scrap laying around.Mondo, look at the bottom of the cooker in the photo where it is hanging on the loader. You will see what looks like a disc on the end. That is an air inlet and there is one on the other end. They are made from 3" linepipe and turned smooth in a lathe. The cap is also turned true in a lathe so they will seal. They are mounted on a 1/2" stainless bolts and nuts so they will not freeze up. If you close both air inlets and the dampers it will snuff a fire right out. Probably more information than you wanted. The son-in-law cooks most Sunday nights and they live just down the road. We plan out a menu and mom and daughter handle the kitchen work and he does the meat. I sit around and drink beer.   Hey they have this rig and another grill I build along time ago so I'm entitled.  He does some great ribs and steaks. Now he can do briskets. They take longer so I can drink more beer while waiting on him.Oreo had already checked everything out and when I fired up the tractor he decided to go catch a grasshopper. He was probably afraid I'd put him to work or drop the cooker on him.
Reply:What a great conversion Oldtimer. It's got a lovely proportion to it and as well as the new application, can still function as a grill. It looks like it means to do business just sitting there. I really like the maker's name on it, too.Down here, brisket is not a popular cut as its got a lot of fat with it. People tend to use it in "boil ups" and good luck to them! I imagine that over time in the smoker, the fat would tend to disappear and contribute to the smoking and flavour on the way.I've nearly worn my mouse out going up and down the page reading people's questions and then your answers, to try to get a handle on the controls. We don't see this type of thing a lot down here but I was at a Christmas do for an agricultural contracting firm a while ago and they had a large enclosure like a hooded big boy's bbq that they had a small gas ring in one end of and they'd cooked pork, beef and lamb over nearly half a day and it was beautiful to taste.I'll have to look for a scrap heap like yours to beg or bludge off and seriously think about making something like that."One of the things we have to be thankful for is that we don't get as much government as we pay for." Reply:Actually that is the user's name. I had some old 309 stainless rod and wrote that on there for him. He said it was "neat".Smoked brisket is a big deal in the southwest, which should make Farmersamm happy. You have to pick the leaner stuff and trim it up. Fat brisket is a mess. We still have a grocery store in our little town and they cut and wrap their beef. They have really good meat so we get some good brisket. We are thinking about rigging a propane burner and a smoker box for this rig because it's easier to keep an even temperature and you can buy different wood chips for different flavors. Mesquite is the only wood available here that you would want to use to cook with. Mesquite bbq and smoked brisket and ribs are kind of a way of life but sometimes we want a change. Please define "boil ups". That is a new one to me.Last edited by Oldtimer; 11-14-2008 at 09:19 PM.
