finally got around to putting my argon tank on the weldercart..my design as usual based on material at hand..but when i got done it didnt fall off and the cart didnt tip over. Attached Images
Reply:It's amazing what ya can make outta stuff you scrounge. It holds the tank..... it's good"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Scrounging is the most efficient type of recycling in my opinion, definite need and definite use.Just a suggestion, how about something to stop the bottom of the bottle from sliding out. Just a small lip or chain or old dog collar.Nice array of vehicles from different countries too."One of the things we have to be thankful for is that we don't get as much government as we pay for." Reply:great job. I am currently thinkin of designs to mobilize my maxstar, HF box, and plasma. I would suggest disecting the rounded handle, leaving ample space to remove argon tank through. Currently it looks as if it my be somewhat difficult. Having blown my back out yrs ago, I try to pay attention.(a little to late)Miller TrailBlazer 251Miller HF-250-1Miller MaxStar 150 STLHyperTherm PowerMax 380 plasmaLincoln PowerMig 180Millermatic 252Miller Diversion 180
Reply:wagingreat minds think different. when i saw those 1 -1/4" conduit 90',s i said "cool, thats where ill stick the bottle."with the bottle inclined, i slipped the valve end under the handle and it was a simple short lift to get the tanks bottom up on the step,
Reply:stwelder..theres a long list of stuff i made that needs paint..
Reply:tractapac--i have thought about restraint but i think it would take a lot to move that bottle .... the round handles are tight fit to the tank and the bottom would need a hell of a lot of acceleration to get it to move.
Reply:Interesting. The 'platform' for the tank sure is stout! But I'll second putting a chain/strap/whatever around the tank near the bottom.  No sense tempting Murphy or fate. And the tank 'platform' is cantilever mounted off the back of the cart and is just 'hanging' from the weld bead connecting the top edge of the platform to the vertical face of that back piece of angle iron or square tube on the platform?  I'd say to put a couple of tension stays/braces to help hold up the tank platform.Like this: Attached Images  The best laid schemes ... Reply:moonrise i was thinking about exactly that, but when i got the beads in place that you can see it "seemed real strong";isnt 1" of 1/4 fillet worth about 1000 pounds?(based on 60k/70k tensile strngth in the filler metal and cross sectional area of the fillet?
Reply:Maybe, but I don't like to tempt Murphy. It's not an aircraft so it doesn't have to fly and it's not a racecar so weight isn't critical, so I tend towards stout and overbuilt.  And the load 'condition' of the tank on the platform supported by a 'line' of weld bead is a complex case of shear, tension, and bending thrown in as well.  There is the weight of the cylinder and the platform pushing straight down (shear) on the weld bead(s), and then because the platform is cantilevered off the back of the cart there is tension (or cross-shear), and then again because of the cantilever there is a bending moment.  And all those combined loads are being resisted by those three (relatively) short interrupted weld beads of about 1.5" long each.Scrounge a piece of angle iron ( or small channel, or square tube, or strap, etc) for the blue piece and two pieces of angle/bar/tube/rod/whatever for the 'stays' (the red pieces) and the cylinder platform should go anywhere even with a full big cylinder and a big guy standing on the edge of the platform.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:Let's broker a compromise!Take MoonRise's suggestion but weld the two red bars to the uprights and save the blue strip to weld across the base of the bottle support to form a lip. That way, you've killed two birds with one shot.My CO2 bottle is held on by a chain that drops in a slot and anytime I go outside to weld, it's amazing how much scope for movement there is. If I was building a trolley I'd consider a small ratchet strap to snig it in close and tight. There was a fire in a workshop here a few years ago and an oxy bottle got knocked over by something collapsing in the heat and it knocked the valve off the top of the cylinder. It came out like a torpedo, through a concrete block wall then a roller door, ricocheted off a fire appliance wheel bending it in the process. It then skittled a firefighter, broke his leg and then took a tour of the park across the road and was about 200 metres away when it ran out of gas.I see a piece of angle in front of a wheel, which suggests worry over a sloping driveway. Now when you turn the trolley back towards the house it's uphill and metal to metal is always ready to slide.. Your pipe retainer is up high. Also if there's nothing on the trolley and you might want to remove your mig, is there enough weight to counterbalance the bottle and bracketry? Or, in that situation, helpful Freddie arrives and says "I'll move the trolley for you" and then proceeds to pull from low down at the front - "Golly gee that tipped over easily" (I can't explain why they'd pull from low down but it's just what they'll do for no reason but with the best intentions in the world)I've seen too many loads spread on roads where people thought "it would take a lot to move that". Then unexpectedly, a lot came along and moved it."One of the things we have to be thankful for is that we don't get as much government as we pay for." Reply:Tractapac,"Then unexpectedly, a lot came along and moved it."  Yup, that's Murphy.Sure, there's more than one way to attach some stays/braces/tension-rods to the cantilevered cylinder platform.  As you said, running them to the existing uprights is another way.And for the cylinder retainer, one could use strap or chain or cable or whatever.  I wouldn't use rope though, it could burn or fray too easily.  Rig up a ratchet strap or a turnbuckle or a cam/lever tensioning method.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:dont take this in the wrong way..i came here to learn.. i love this site and you guys..will post mods..
Reply:moonnrise what you said made me think..if i make the tank platform a few inches longer i can stand on it with one foot and with the other push the damn thing around the block like a scooter..this could be the start of the welderwagon races..
Reply:You'd have to have different classes for the different machines.Let's see, 120V MIG machines, 220V MIG machines, inverter TIG/SMAW machines, big old transformer machines, engine drives, and of course the unlimited class.  Maybe some others in there too.  Maybe make it sort of like the chainsaw or lumberjack races.  You start at the starting line, 'run' xx feet (or meters if you're in the International class), plug in or start the machine, and then have to weld.    The best laid schemes ... Reply:finally got a round tuit. i bent up some half inch bars to make  support for my cantilevered bottle platform. must of clamped  and unclamped the bar down to my table 30     times ,  going back and forth getting closer and further and closer.  finally hit on a little jig that only gottsta be clamped down once and the bar slides in ,gets bent ,and slides out. Changed the cart handle tosomething that i dont kill myself changing bottle. only thing i didnt get finished was top and bottom bottle restraints--got a temporary piece of 3/16 wire  for now.
