Which material do you prefer to use in a weld-el header? I'm currently building headers from 304/304L 1.5" stainless and am wonder if I should make a change to 316/316L stainless steel? It cost more, but I've heard it is more corrosion resistant then 304???Also, why when I buy stainless do they group 304 and 304L or 316 and 316L. Does this mean you may or maynot be getting the low carbon type?Example(this is what I'm presently using for my headers)http://www.acestainless.com/index.ph...od&productId=2Heres an intersting PDF I just found comparing 304 to 316:http://www.mksinst.com/pdf/tub...el%22Here is a picture of my collector at his point. I have jigged up the manifold and have a couple runners tacked together:
Reply:Quite frankly when you're using such thick tubing either would be fine.  That is some heavy material!  It definitely has it's merits, like it's easy to get, inexpensive, easy to weld, but it's way heavier than you need.  I don't really see any advantage to going with 316 in your case...
Reply:BTW - what are you working on with 5 cylinders?  Gotta be a vw?  Surely wouldn't be a 300 mercedes diesel...  That's some nice machine work on the collector parts - I was checking those out on you previous thread.
Reply:Audi 5 cylinder:Heres my car with a header I purchased(to be replaced by one of my units). The thickness is for 2 reasons:-Crack Resistance-Insulation (heat drives the turbine wheel)The material is 0.108" wall thickness. Definitely strong stuff.Regards,Justin
Reply:As for the question on "grouping" 304/304L or 316/316L when ordering? They do not. They each have unique UNS numbers, so you shouldn't order 304 and randomly receive 304L or vice-versa.
Reply:For high temp applications 321 stainless steel welded with 347 rod.  I built a gluharef pressure jet engine about 35 years ago and the plans called for that alloy and that filler rod.  This prevents carbide precipitation.
Reply:I talked to Ace Stainless about the 304/304L and 316/316L:"Both the 304/304L and the 316/316L are dual certified and have a low carbon content...that's what the L designates. "
Reply:Here are some pictures of 1 of the runners tacked on. I wont be able to work on this until the 25th of this month. There is a 2 week break between summer and fall term at school:
Reply:Here is the manifold I'm modeling the turbine flange placement off of:
