Here is a shot of the bumper I am building for the Jeep I am building:It is mounted with 4 1/2"-13 grade 8 bolts and lock washers, and will have a horizontal Grade 8 bolt through each frame rail as discussed below.Recovery tabs are 1" thick, protrude 1/4" through the rear of the bumper and are welded front and back with multiple passes. When all is said and done, I am sure that a crane could lift the Jeep by the recovery tabs. This photo shows one of 4 tabs I welded on either side of each frame rail so that I can run a bolt horizontally through an existing hole in each frame rail:Bumper itself is 2x4 1/4" tube, and the winch plate is 1/4" plate. Reply:If you are mounting a winch directly to that plate you may want to beef the underside a bit where the wich will mont to prevent the plate from pulling, unless it's for show. What kind of winch are you going to mount_________________Chris
Reply:i have a 9k winch on my 6k lbs land rover and i've done a few hard pulls...anyhoo, the winch plate on mine is 1/4.  it's plenty strong.andy
Reply:Lorenzo,Thanks for the comments. I do plan to add some angle on the bottom of the plate to stiffen it up. Plan is to add either the Warn 8274-50 or the 9,000 model. This Jeep is definitely NOT being built as a mallcrawler.Building a Jeep from the ground up as a graduation present for my kid. Reply:wow talk about a strong bumper i wish i had that when someone hit my truck :-)they would think twice before hitting it again that's for sure :-) nice jobJason
Reply:Great job!  I'm building bumpers for my Jeep too...basically just like that except I used weld-on D rings.  I'm fabing up my winch plate now and are doing the same as yours.  I will be welding the fairlead mount to the front of the plate and welding an angle to the rear to prevent the plate from bending.  I have a Warn XD9000i winch.MM175 MIGCutmaster 38 PlasmaCraftsman 30gal compressor4x6 HF bandsaw1hp HF floor drill pressRyobi Cutoff SawAssorted grindersNot enough time
Reply:One question...my Jeep frame has a small tab that was used to weld the crossmember tube between the frame rails that is on top of the frame rail.  This tab prevents the winch plate from sitting flat on top of the frame rail.  I was thinking I'd grind off those tabs and run another bead just inside the frame rail so my winch plate will sit flush.  Did your Jeep frame have the same issue?MM175 MIGCutmaster 38 PlasmaCraftsman 30gal compressor4x6 HF bandsaw1hp HF floor drill pressRyobi Cutoff SawAssorted grindersNot enough time
Reply:Nice looking bumper you have there, the only thing i would change is to extend those tabs you have going down the side of the frame rails and drill it out so you can bolt it to the frame there..I dont trust the 4 stock bolt hole, have seen too manny tow hooks and bumpers get ripped out frome there....Millermatic 175 MIGMiller Spectrum 375 PlasmaLincoln AC/DC 225 BuzzboxM-Tech NE5 Tube bender withcustom CNC machined 3/4" think main arms

Reply:WOW....now that a new one on me...I'll have to share that with my jeep'n buddys.  I'll most definately have a disconnect on my Jeep.MM175 MIGCutmaster 38 PlasmaCraftsman 30gal compressor4x6 HF bandsaw1hp HF floor drill pressRyobi Cutoff SawAssorted grindersNot enough time

Reply:Finished up the tubing bender over the weekend, and was able to get the hoops finished for the bumper. I wanted to go with a stinger but the wife didn't like the look. Reply:Is it me or is the utility knife in the same spot as in the first post? Looks good.. I don't know if it's the way the Jeep is sitting or what but the drivers side of the bumper looks higher than the pass. See where the main loop crosses in front of the directionals, on the dvr side the screws are covered on they're not on the pass.Is that the rear bumper on the floor along the pass side of the jeep?_________________Chris
