Has anyone seen the results given by a good synergic mig welder. Do the results stack up favourably against the results achievable with a  tig set?...especially on aluminium?
Reply:in my opinion..there is no way in hell that a mig can be as pretty as a tig..not on aluminum anyway.. 'taint gonna happen no matter who is running it  ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:I was really hoping for a bit more analysis..not a luddite knee jerk reaction to new technology! Nor an outbreak of sycophantic back slapping....................
Reply:I'm not familiar with the term Synergic MIG, but I'm asuming it is the same as a Pulse MIG? If so I have seen some impresive looking beads on aluminum done with a Pulse MIG. I had an oportunity to play with a pulse mig at an open house in June for about 20-30 minutes. From that little experience I would say that the penetration should be comparable with TIG. Although I don't have any facts to back that up. Also from my limited experience I would say that it will take a bit of practice to achieve a TIG weld appearance with a pulse MIG. Just my .02

Reply:Originally Posted by lotechman...  Synergic refers to the type of power supply where the voltage and feed rate for the wire are linked.  For example, I set up a wire speed rate that I like and set my voltage on a synergic machine.  After running for awhile for some reason I want to turn the heat down bit.  I simply adjust the wire feed rate down and the voltage will adjust slightly to compensate.  This is all programmed in by the designer...
Reply:Fantastic!! thanks for your learned imput. With my (so far) inauspicious start to TIG I've started to cast about for an alternative and synergic migs might be the answer. The very good thing is that the arc length is programmed to be a constant, so however your hand wavers it's possible to come up with a decent bead. Also you can steady your torch hand because there's no filler rod in the other hand....Furthermore the most niggling thing for me with TiG is that it seems to be very intolerant of a poor fit on thin gauge steel - as soon as I get near an edge it vaporises.Last edited by whippet5669; 10-01-2006 at 05:22 PM.
