Welding forged steel?

I just want to be sure before I do this but can I TIG weld these D-rings to a piece of steel plate such as 1020? They're forged and seem to have some sort of goldish coating on it.http://www.harborfreight.com/1-2-hal...ing-96232.html
Reply:I'd say yes. You should be able to stick or MIG weld them as well.
Reply:the goldish coating and the tig process wont get along wellgrind it offthe item in the pic was obviously designed for carriage bolts, maybe they have one designed to be welded with no holes..no biggy i guess
Reply:The yellow coating is zinc chromate. I'd clean off the coating with a flap disc.

Reply:I don't think it applies in this case, but some of the shiny "yellow coating" you see on metal items is CADMIUM. DO NOT WELD ON THIS STUFF WITHOUT REMOVING IT! CADMIUM FUMES ARE FAR MORE TOXIC THAN ZINC!

Reply:i welded some of them to a gooseneck plate last year.the strap that holds the ring is plain steel.i used 6011 or 7018 can not remember which .i guess i could look at it and tell if necessary.
Reply:The rings were just mild steel.   i have welded tons of them never had a weld failure.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:I wouldn't weld the ring itself.  I would use some type of hold down.  If you don't like the bolt on strap, replace it with a short piece of angle iron.  Looks pretty slick and is easy to weld.My name's not Jim....
