Here is pic's of a fishing rod holder I'm making for a family member. He's a captain of a tug and is usually traveling around at trolling speed. So I've been elected to make a holder for him that will attach to the 1 1/2" handrail. It's all S.S.. Got most of the cutting, prep out of the way today, have some 1/8" 316L for the tig welding ahead. Then polish it to a mirror finish. He already caught a 100 Wahoo. Reply:Looks good.    anything you can make for hunting or fishing is cool.   You must be a pipe fitter or a sprink?         daye
Reply:I was in the pipefitters union from 81'- 87', then fab shops, non union pipe welding, etc. Now 9 years in the fire sprinkler industry, estimating for the last 6 years. Kinda miss the welding, though.Good judgement comes from experience.Experience comes from bad judgement.
Reply:That's really neat. Was out in No. Cal a long time ago.  Went out to Mare (sp?) Island.  Was standin' there by the channel, and a tug went by.  I've never heard such a sound of power in my life.  That diesel made the air vibrate.  Almost like those kids with their bass boxes in their cars, but bigger.I was reading that if a guy doesn't know what he's doin', that he can drag the stern of a tug under water in a heartbeat when he's pullin'.  Sounds like a dangerous, skilled, job.
Reply:Made a little progress over the past few weeks. Just trying to get some of the warpage out. Had it clamped down, still sprung back up a little. Clamped the two halves together than tacked them, and then used the rose bud to heat the whole piece up cherry. Probally going to be a treat to drill the holes. Oh I got a reminder of our fire alarm, my rosebud tip set off the heat detector in the garage today and called the FD, whoops.Good judgement comes from experience.Experience comes from bad judgement.

Reply:Nice job and its heavy duty nature will blend in well with the tug."One of the things we have to be thankful for is that we don't get as much government as we pay for." Reply:I like it! Tow boating and fishing sounds like a charmed life, especially when you get a shot at 100 pound Wahoo! But, I know better. The rod holder is really looking nice. Reply:Tanglediver, those sea's looked pretty rough. Awesome photo's. I liked the look of the sea's in the photo you attached, a little more conducive for fishing. Oh and here is a picture of his wahoo. Attached ImagesGood judgement comes from experience.Experience comes from bad judgement.
Reply:Finally got the time to finish the project. Time has been rare as of late. Hope he brings in a 600lb tuna now. I will post any other fish this rod holder plays a part in getting on board. Attached ImagesGood judgement comes from experience.Experience comes from bad judgement.
Reply:Wondered how it was going.  It turned out perfect. The bolt flanges turned out absolutely straight.  How did you get rid of the seam at the end where they meet the half round pipe?"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Thanks. Farmersamm, just a little welding, a little grinding, sanding, and polishing. Wanted to minimize any place saltwater could get into. And it has a better appearance. Hope he likes it for $400.00.Good judgement comes from experience.Experience comes from bad judgement.
Reply:The edges look like gunsmithing work.  All perfect radius's.Some kinda expensive metal!!!!  You couldn't buy one this well made for the price.  No way.  Nice"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
