duaneb55,Ever since your thread on your 7018 Stick practice session I got the bug to try some myself. I am not a well versed stick welder and particularly do not specialize in all position SMAW even though I weld/fab for a living. Just don’t have much call for it in the shop.Recently I have a small window of time to do maintenance in the shop and “the wife” has even scheduled some of my other non specialized talents like installing new tile floor/vanity/sink/fixtures and painting the bathroom while I am supposedly available.Well when she came home from work last night I did not have the bath painted or even started on that job. Instead I was messing in the shop stick welding. I put everything else aside and just had fun goofing off.I always admired/envied sound good looking out of position welds especially in the field. Could be getting goofier in my older age but I have not been this anxious to weld in a long time. Now I am even going to the LWS to get some fresh 7018 and 6010. I am determined to get a handle on vertical up Stick even though I may never make a weld requiring it.Anyway I posted a few pics. for all to make fun of.  The welds are vertical up using 10 to 12 year old 1/8” 7018, with an average of 95 amps or so. The material is 1018 steel ¼” thick. Thanks for the inspiration Duane. The wife just grumbled something about wishing someone would start a thread on bathroom remodeling. Go figure.BTW, may I use your oven to cook my old welding rod? The wife already has enough reasons as to why she doesn’t use ours. Attached Images

Reply:Fun stuff, the key for me was starting flat and raising the peice a little bit at a time until it was vertical.I made a series of roughly 10 pound bricks out of some scrap over a sixteen week semester to practice vertical up for testing. The white area is the base metal. When I first started, I could not keep a bead going uphill at all!!! I passed the test, but it takes constant practice to improve. City of L.A. Reply:OMS, those look good, now put a weave over top of them.  I gotta give you folks credit.  Learning to weld up is a skill that will always stay with you.  My point in the other thread was to acquire the skill.  It takes a long time.  It was the hardest thing for me to learn.  Once I got it, I found I could do it with MIG, TIG and other processes too.  You get my respect for taking the time to learn vertical up.I have a job coming up, 3/4" plates, 1/2" fillets both sides 3 feet tall.  9 of em.  These will be tested (UT?) for full penetration and AWS visual inspected. 7018 what ever size rod I want to run.  Probably 1/8 for the root and 5/32 for the last 2 passes.  I can't make a 1/2" wide bead, 5/16" is the AWS limit.  OK, I can make a 1/2" wide fillet no problem, but AWS won't accept it. The base of the gussets will be welded to 1.5" plate only 6" long.  Gussets will be beveled both sides for full penetration welds.  I have 50 lbs of 3/16 for that. Stay tuned for pics......David  Last edited by David R; 12-09-2008 at 08:32 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:OMS,I can now add 'inspirational home wrecker' to my resumé.  That's got to be one for the books.Where do I start?  I fully understand your situation regarding "the bug" which is what drove my 'test' in the first place and I'm moved that my thread inspired you to challenge your skills  but feel kinda bad about being on Mrs. OMS's 'bad boy' list now.  I hope she at least likes the new piece of art for the 'study' as specter suggested.I never thought it would turn into what it has but if you've been following the 'culprit' thread, you'll have noticed I acknowledged some of the more noticable performance deficiencies and side affects of using the rod that should have been left to lie where it was found that MoonRise so graciously posted.  I for one sure have a better understanding of the 'whys and wherefores' that I didn't have before and if nothing else - other than the extreme fun and insight of reading the many responses - learned to recognize the characteristics of bad 7018 rod. With that said, in looking at your pratice welds, you have now inspired me to pick up some new stuff and give it a go as well.Tell your sweetheart I just spoke to Judy to let her know I was back home and she said she and Mrs. OMS can get started on that remodeling thread as soon as she (Judy) gets back home too.As for using the oven, You'll have to wait 'til the next batch finishes running throught the 'clean' cycle.btw, I'm not qualified to judge but your practice welds look good from here!MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Tanglediver, next time I need a short piece of square barstock maybe you could manufacture/weld one up for me.
Reply:Duane... follow up to post #10Your threads and posts are always very entertaining. Enjoy your step by step pictures and commentary. Obviously many others do too. As far as you being an ‘inspirational home wrecker’, the only home wrecking going on here is caused by my kids and dog. Also Mrs. OMS (Sue) has no bad boy list as she is very understanding unless it comes to fine art. See post 14 this thread. I also enjoy the insight of reading the many responses associated with this forum. Someone will usually hit upon or provide a path to fix your situation. Please tell Judy that Sue appreciates her concern and willingness to help with the remodeling thread but that may have to be put on hold as my darling wife is now considering LOOKING AT NEW HOUSES.
