I have seen a few references to cutting steel with arc welders, but have been unable to find a description of what accessories it takes, what the process is, and the thickness of metal that can be cut.  I intend to puchase a Lincoln 225 arc welder soon and would like to know if I can cut steel with it.Thank you for your input,Marcus
Reply:I have just cranked the welder and used a rod to burn through a piece of steel back before I had anything but my uncles old tombstone welder.  It'll work if that's all ya got, ain't very pretty though.  You can get rods specially for cutting though.http://www.zena.net/htdocs/welders/R...PERBLAST.shtmlJust depends on how much cutting you need to do.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools

Reply:I actually used my welder at work the other day to cut off some hangers off a billboard since we didnt have our torch available (for some unknown reason someone welded on the hangers and we werent informed).  Well the hangers are  1/8" flat thats bent into a J shape.  So I took my stinger with a 1/8"  6011 rod and turned my machine up to around 160-190 amps and started a puddle, when the puddle got hot enough I would start moving slowly and acutally use the rod to push the puddle through.  I cut 16 hangers that are 3" wide and didnt take me too long.  the cuts werent perfect, but I wasnt trying, but could easily be cleaned with a grinder.  I've actually done this same thing with 3/16" material and it worked very crudely.  May actually be able to produce decent results with a more appropriate rod.Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American G. Reply:How many sticks did you use to make all those cuts?
Reply:you can also use a stick welder to make lots of holes in "parts"hold it in one place at as high as it goes and blast away..watch your feet and your pants for that matter.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:They make a special rod for stick welders that can cut.  It's a very rough cut and doesn't require the equipment of a carbon arc.
Reply:For 16 3" peices i used like 10 rods.  But due to the position of the hanger and the lights I could only use maybe 3/4 of the rod before I needed to get a longer one.Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American G. Reply:I have that welder, but have not tried that yet.  (Ac 225)
Reply:When I'm welding a length of chain on to something, I often use my little inverter welder to cut the excess chain instead of trying to hold it in place to cut with grinder or track down the torch. just a normal 7018 will cut through as much as 1/2" chain
