Diff between 7018 rod and 7014I picked up a whole pile of BLueshield 7018 thinking they were the 7014 and i was totally wrong i cannot even get them to burn. The 7014's are beautiful to work with I just want to know what the steps to get the 7018's to burn..... Preheating? I cranked the machine to all levels and nothing...
Reply:your machine should be set reverse polarity direct current.
Reply:I damn well new it.....Its only ac and the sales guy stated they were great with ac GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Reply:save them for when you get a dc machine.
Reply:Should be this week im putting my little 135 miller wirefeed thats 110 volt up for sale cheep!
Reply:I agree. Save them for the time when you get a DC machiine. 7018 is a great low hydrogen rod. By the way, 7018 is also made for AC only. I have some and it runs very well. It is marked "AC" however.
Reply:When the suffix of the electrode is AC( especially for 7018) the electrode is designed for AC.  E7018 electrodes are meant to be used with DCRP, no AC unless noted as such. How do you know when a salesman is lying?whenever they are talking! my girlfriend made me
Reply:Jimmy, just so you know,7018 is a low hydrogen rod intended for the highest quality steel welds requiring 70,000 psi tensile strength.  The coating on the rod is intended to have very low moisture content so that the weld porosity and hydrogen content is minimized.  Rods like 7014, 6013, 6011, and 6010 have cellulose based coatings that produce CO2 gas that shields the weld.  7018 is a rutile (mineral) composition that contains less moisture. This rod is intended to be stored in a rod oven to keep it dry after opening the hermetically sealed container.  Code welding requires that Low Hi rod be stored properly above a certain temperature in the rod oven, and that it be used or returned to the oven within a certain time frame.  If exposed for too long, it is allowable to bake out the rod at a higher temperature.Hydrogen in steel welds, especially with higher carbon steels, can lead to a delayed brittle crack in the heat affected zone (HAZ) called hydrogen induced cracking. You probably don't care about all this, if you eventually use this rod just use it on low stress, non-critical, low carbon steel projects.  Keep it as dry as possible, no problem, just wanted you to know what it is you bought. Also the technique is different that that for 6011 or 6010.  With vertical or overhead with 6011/6010 it is common to "whip and pause".  The whip is a wrist motion to pull the electrode a little further away and forward in the joint to allow the puddle to cool a bit.  The pause is the directed application of the rod to the joint to melt the base metal and deposit the filler.  If you pause in one place too long the puddle drips, so that's when you whip out for a moment and let it cool.  With 7018 however, you want to keep a tight arc at all times, whipping out will likely result in excessive porosity.  The 7018core wire will tend to burn back slightly within a cone of the coating.  You will almost be dragging the coating as you weld. This is one site that describes the various SMAW rod types.http://www.esabna.com/EUWeb/FM_handbook/577fm1_2.htm
Reply:Isn't A 7014 rod a good one to use I bought some and I lke them alot you get a nice looking bead and the the slag chips away nice. Is it a good strong weld ?Will   Supports Autism Awareness                            My ToysBobCat 225 PLusMillermatic 130Miller Spectrum 300 CutmateEverlast Power Tig 185 Micro April is Autism Month .

Reply:Yup, I´ve burned standard 7018 rods with AC. It´s awesomely hard to get an arc started and to maintain it. It produces so much splatter and will take you days to kinda get used to it. But at the end it could be used with AC. Use 7014 if yours is an AC buzz box.My Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3   4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!
Reply:Steel, I agree, 7014 is a wonderful rod for flat and horizontal welding and it works great on AC.  I built a wood stove out a hot water tank using these rods with a Lincoln 225 buzz box. You'll notice that 7014 and 7024 have a thicker coating than 6011/10/13 because iron powder has been added to the coating to improve deposition rate.  The beauty or 7014 and 7024 is that they are "drag" electrodes, since the core rod burns back within a cone of coating, the correct arc length is automatically maintained when simply dragging the rod along the joint at a slight angle.  And as you say, the slag will cleanly curl up and lift off the weld by itself.  These rods are so fluid the weld is very smooth and has great appearance but they cannot be used vertical or overhead. For a buzz box welding I would keep an assortment of 6011, 6013, 7014 and 7024.  6011 for deep penetration on heavy material and out of position welding.  6013 for thin material, less penetration, smoother bead, less spatter, and easier to operate than 6011.  7014 for smooth flat position welds.  7024 for larger, very smooth flat position welds.
Reply:Thats pretty much what I have the guy whom I got the one welder from gave me a lot of 6011 he said they were good to learn with that I can weld almost anything with them. And we had some 7014 rods at work which I tried and like the appearence of the weld and clean up alot better. I know the guys that have been welding for years like my friend greg make it look so easy but with practice I am getting better at it. I started off with mig and though that stick would be easy also, but I was wrong I was sticking that rod like mad but like I said with practice I have been getting better. Will   Supports Autism Awareness                            My ToysBobCat 225 PLusMillermatic 130Miller Spectrum 300 CutmateEverlast Power Tig 185 Micro April is Autism Month .
Reply:Oh yeah pulser I may pick up some 7024 and try them also Are they good on AC welders also because both of my stick welders are AC.Will   Supports Autism Awareness                            My ToysBobCat 225 PLusMillermatic 130Miller Spectrum 300 CutmateEverlast Power Tig 185 Micro April is Autism Month .
Reply:Steel,I had great results with 7024 AC.  See the ESAB link in the thread above, it gives some info on SMAW.
