The latch on my stainless toolbox in my truck broke and I'm going to put 2 hasp locks on it. I am not experienced with sheet metal or stainless. Am I better off sticking them with stainless rod or brazing? I have no access to a tig welder. (hasp locks are zinc coated steel.)Last edited by jdwelder; 11-03-2006 at 01:17 AM.
Reply:As long as the tool box is thick enough to stick weld I'd use 309 stainless electrodes if I had a couple.
Reply:A truck box is probably thick enough to stick weld it, but I'd get a good measure of the thickness before I went at it, to get an idea of the size electrodes to get and how many amps to run at.  Why wouldn't you try to find some stainless hasp instead of galv?  I just have never seen anyone weld galvanized to stainless and don't know what problems that might cause (outside of the obvious fumes from welding galv.).Brazing would probably warp the box up badly.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:West Marine, or any other marine supply should have some quality stainless hasps.AutoArc 120 MIGMontgomery Ward AC/DC 230r.i.p. - Miller Thunderbolt 05 Jeep Liberty Renegade
Reply:maybe  pop rivets  if too thin to weld
Reply:you can mig it. use stainless wire with 75% argon 25% helium   remember you can weld stainless wire to steel but you can not weld steel to stainless.
