Anyone know of any place in Maryland (preferably near Baltimore or Annapolis) that sells steel, either new or scrap. I really like Metalsdepot.com, I think their prices are 100x better than home depot and they have a good selection and really fast service, but if I add up the $15-20 shipping on every order, it'll get expensive quickly. I haven't really been able to find places that SELL the stuff, only recycling centers where you bring the stuff to. Any info would be great. Thanks.
Reply:May want to check out Potomac Steel in Springfield.
Reply:i don't think that a lot of the poster's realize that they can do much better by spending a little more money. you would be surprised to find out how much a minimum order is with a lot of larger metal suppliers. i am familiar with metals depot and let me tell you they are high, they do however fulfill a need. i deal with one large aluminum supplier and two steel suppliers down here. the minimum order is 100 dollars and they will bring it to me. my orders are for the most part larger but they will do it. only additional charge you might run into today is a fuel surcharge. the pricing at these places is significantly better. if you have to buy more than you need there will probably be a time you can use it. right? there is nothing better than having something delivered if possible. it's a waste of time to go somewhere, wait around, and then have to tote it to your location. it's at least worth looking into.there is an aluminum supplier near me that i go to if i am stuck for time, a lot of marine people use the co and i swear they think the aluminum is different than what the large suppliers carry. if i go to the larger guy i get it delivered and the price is about one half.it pays to shop.
Reply:Look up Boulevard Sales on RT1 in Elkridge. They offer small quantities compared to some of the bigger yards that won't sell to you unless you want a tractor trailer load.
Reply:Thanks guys. I appreciate the advise. I'll look into these places.
Reply:BMG Metals 410 355-64641954 Halethorpe Farms Rd,Suite 100Halethorpe MD 21227Talk to Mary, she is the best. I buy $100,000 or more worth of steel there a year, but they are more than happy to sell you just one stick at a time. They have great customers service, walk in orders get a done asap. They are less than 5 mins from 95 & 495 interchange. I would stay away from Boulevard Sales they are know as "rusty metal supply", as thier entire supply of steel is outside in the weather.Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers
Reply:+1 for BMG metals. One of the guys I work with buys a lot from them in Lynchburg, Va, and if he buys enough at once they deliver for free, and he is over 2 hours from their shop.
Reply:I can say that Potomac steel will sell small quantities. Friendly to deal with, but they are on the other side of the river. (That's OK for me). There is EJ Enterprises for things like stainless and aluminum. They have a walk up counter and will sell drops (left overs) for $2/lbs. Good place to find that 1/4 stainless 2x4 plate... or aluminum plate. Some of their scrap is just rediculous. If you need a solid block of aluminum, like 6x6x4, try them. When it comes to buying new, they aren't bad in price (light years ahead of home depot) but if you need to get something like 3" exhaust pipe (.059" etc.) and they don't have it stock they have in my opinion steep minimums. They have big shear and shear the plates etc.Boulevard Sales is friendly enough. They do have a barn or two with stuff in it so its not all rusty... Just mostly. I can't remember why I was there. Maybe they have Saturday hrs? I needed to build a 'flitch plate' to sandwhich between to 2x10s. Hand to lightly sand the whole plate to get it thin enough. Oh, they say the first cut is free - but they do all cuts with a blow torch - sloppy cuts at that. Thanks everyone for the tip on BMG metals. I will give them a call next time I need something.Oh, and there is a place in NJ that seems to have a good selection of steel and stainless.Fazzio. Highly thought of on some bulletin boards. I needed some 15 gauge stainless square tubing and they had it in stock for decent prices. www.ordersteel.com. Its a trip but if you need it in stock.... That place had me thinking of building a 5x10 trailer just to haul stuff over interstate '95 (I wonder what the tolls would be?) They also have multiple locations so be sure to ask if they have a branch that is closer that has what you need.Con Fuse!Miller Dynasty 350Millermatic 350P-Spoolmatic 30AMiller Multimatic 200Hypertherm PowerMax 1000G3Miller Maxstar 200DX

Reply:Prices are up everywhere, my best price, delivered today for 2 sticks of 3" Sched40 pipe and one stick of 1/2" X 6" FB was $670.07. I am not in MD just saying.....Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Durrett-Sheppard is another steel supplier in Baltimore. They deliver on site also. If your near Hagerstown, Maryland Metals is the place to go. Cheap prices and they have a boat load of stuff outside that comes from the scrap yard that is still good. Be prepared the spend two plus hours out there wandering around, They have everything from 1/4" to 6"plate to bar grating to who knows what. |
