So we got this "intern" at work. they want him to work in every part of the shop. Today he comes over to the welding shop and says he has to learn this. Now this kid doesn't seem to want to have anything to do with getting hot, dirty, or things that smell bad. So I set up the Mig had him cut some coupons out, had him prep them, and showed him how to run stringers. He run like 5 beads then found something else in the air conditioning he had to do. Well it got me thinking, I get people all the time want me to teach them how to weld. I just cant seem to do it. I set them up, show them what I do, give them pointers, and they seem to get discouraged when their beads dont look just like mine. I then tell them it takes ALOT of practice, everyone welds a little differently, and if anyone could just pick up a gun and be a pro in one afternoon I would be out of a job. The old saying is "those who can do. those who cant teach" Well I must definitely CAN because I CANT teach for sh1t
Reply:the hallmark of a teacher is being able to teach different people, from different points of view. Oh, but the most important part is having an interested student...which is sounds like you did not have. I usually watch the apprentices under my hood while they weld. I make it a point not to try and get them to do what I do, just do what they do better. Tighter Arc, different rod angle. Whatever.Weldanpower 225 G7Ironworkers Local #24

Reply:There are four conditions that are named for people who need training:1) Willing and Able-Tell this man what the objective is and allow him to do it. This person can train others.2) Unwilling and Able-This is a person who needs a contract (subcontractor)3) Willing and Unable-This is a person who needs training.4) Unwilling and Unable-Do not waste time on this person. Send him home. You were put in bad position by your boss. As you have no authority over this intern. You do not know the deal he has with the intern. Go home have a beer and be good to your wife.

Reply:Having taught HS shop, I can tell you that if they don't want to learn and have no interest in the subject you are not going to be able to teach them $hit.   The reason you are having trouble is those who are really interested have already enrolled in a program of some kind.    In a workplace it is different from school.  If its part of his job, just let the ol' boss know this guy has no interest or motivation in learning to weld so if its part of his job duties, then time to find a different new hire...Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:I guess I will just run him thru all the processes I have available in the shop to at least give him a working knowledge of sticking two pieces of metal together.  I also have some machine shop equipment. Maybe lathes and mills will be more his speed (no pun intended )

Reply:You will go through a lot of chaff to get to the good quality kernals.  You have to create some sort of screening system.  That stepson failed the screening test.I saw one small machine shop operator run apprentices through his shop on a regular basis.  he told me he started a young fellow off cleaning up the machine shop.  From the attitude and work habits over several months  the owner decided if he should offer the kid an apprenticeship.  At that point he told me he drove the kid hard teaching him every machine in the shop so that at the end of his third year he was working as a machinist all his fourth and last year.  The boss also warned each new apprentice that once he had his trades papers he would be let go and another apprentice would be started.   It was a small shop and the owner could not afford to have more tradesmen than himself and one other.

Reply:I like what was mentioned earlier.. able to teach to different folks.  One has to be able to communicate with different personalities.  .This one guy was/is  very eager to improve and get better.  Always asking questions.   He asked once  " how did you get to be where your at? "  and I had explained I read constantly and told him I would give him some of my books ect.   Later I learned he could only read a few words.  I cant even spell iliteracy  but you get the point. weld it like you own it
Reply:Hi guys! I read this post. Very surprised that someone does not want to learn welding. Maybe someone that it's not like it. But I do I like this job. It's very good to do something with my hands. live and work in Ukraine. Work welder valued but poorly paid. That's why many welders from Ukraine traveling abroad. By the way, I too am looking for work for themselves. If anyone can tell who is gaining welders?
Reply:With welding I would talk with the guy and find out what his interests are, usually welding has something to do with at least one guy interest so start with the obvious which is cars or motorcycles then show him some pictures of custom welded headers or turbine setups or bike frames.
Reply:Take it easy on the youngins, Some of them really can weld. (Some of them cant and shouldn't even be allowed on your property) When I was 16 I was putting combines back togather for the farmer I worked for. By the time I was 18 I was doing tool and die as well as welding for a local steel company. I have seen quite a few Youngins come out of the local vo-tech progarams extremely capable mostly due to a farming background combined with proper training. Ive also seen some that screwed up a free ride to the vo-tech cause they couldn't show up.Really comes down to the individual.Lincolin Power Wave 450, Lincoln Powermig 255, Lincoln Pro Mig 140, Lincoln Squarewave Tig 275, Miller Big 40 G(with Hobart Hefty suitcase), Thermal Arc 95S and Esab PCM875 in an already full machine shop.

Argggggg...If the guy don't want to learn/do it then whatever you are trying to teach is a waste of time and $$$$$Tell him to fine another babysitter.Find someone that wants the chance and the problems will vanish.I teach tig on occasion and there is NO PROBLEM with the people that show up wanting the chance..They are all ears and eyes.Makes my job easier.Big difference in "I want to"  vs.  "I have to"  in people put in this position.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Damn ...I though everyone who owns a welding machine was a welder. I worked at a vo-tech for over 15 years enjoyed every bit of it as did all of the student (all but one) and can say I was proud of what walked out of my classes at the end. The one thing I found was make it fun and they will learn, yes keep it interesting but fun is a big part. I had a 17 yr old vo-tech student with me last summer, his biggest problem was fear , not fear of the work, fear of saying I CAN do that. Once Drew got past that he progressed quite fast. Teaching people has been the most rewarding part of my 38 years of welding.
Reply:almost everyone I know has zero interest at all in welding, lol..My 1 friend that I was able to get to at least check it out for 5 minutes was more interested in the lights behind him flickering "from the welding machine" (which was actually just the autodark helmet),while I was welding..He almost dove onto the floor when I accidently flashed us.lol..He wouldnt even try it once.Oh well..
Reply:what this old man has seen over years and it seems to be getting worse is about 90 percent of the young squirts want a job but dont want to work. and d@#$m getting dirty aint going to happen if they can help it.
Reply:i'm pretty sure its more likely due to the majority of kids today nott wanting anything to do with labor intensive jobs.. a/c, chair, computer is what they want.. this mentality started in the mid to late 90's when school systems started abandoning trade schools and started preaching computer science and such jobs in the medical industry and such....i feel alot of it stems from parents not wanting their kids to be welders, machinists, or mechanics and such as a career, simply because these trades are failing in this country..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:Alot comes from parents telling kids you can do anything and pushing four year degrees on kids so they can get a "good job"  Sometimes the world just need hard workers. Too many cheifs etc. Dont matter how many engineers you have if you dont have someone to shovel the coal the train dont move.Millermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
