Reply:Took these with my cell phone. I work at a locomotive manufacturing facility. The loco's above are going to Africa, and we have a few Saudi's coming up next. I'll post some more pics soon with some weld shots.
Reply:That's some kinda stuff!!!Makes me feel like an idiot when I think I know something about equipmentI saw a thing on TV some years back about African railroads. South Africa, and Rhodesia I think. It was called "Great Railway Journeys"They said at the time that most of the rolling stock in some countries was still Baldwins from the 40's and very early 50's. Then a lot of other stuff was standard diesel/electric Soviet Bloc locos.Show some more"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Farmersam: I think the ones we sent to Africa were going to some diamond mines, or some kind of mine. I will post some more next week, got another job so Im taking as many pictures as I can.
Reply:Thanks Beagle Fab, we just finished up a CSX, Canadian pacific contract. We have two demos and 7 Saudi's to do that I know of. It's getting pretty slow though. Over in the rebuild area they are pretty much dead. When I first started there They were filling a contract for 55 Union Pacific units.

Reply:JWC My little three year old who loves trains, saw the first picture and knew exactly what it was! Is that engine being rebuilt or is it a new production? Most of the newer locomotives I have seen look a little different that that one.CRL283, you must either enjoy railfaning or work with railroads to know that kind of info!Keep the pics coming! Here is what I have so Far:Miller:Shop Master 300 A A/C D/CS 22a Wire FeederRFC-14 Tig PedalHF-251D High Freq. Reply:I have worked on a few EMD 20 cylinder engines myself. There are lots of ships around the world with them. They are VERY loud. The turbos really scream.Richard TerryMarine engineer............. C'mon retirement!
Reply:Normy, the one in the pic is a remanufactured engine. Normally on the new trains we have been building, they have been installing new low emissions gen set switchers, instead of the old EMD engines. I will post some more pics next week. There are three different sections of the plant where I work. One does engine rebuild, machining, welding and repairing old blocks, one does all the fab, and metal work, and one does the new loco's, along with a paint shop. The place was built in the 30's. The saudi's we are getting ready to build are going to have the old 645 engines. Most are 16 cylinder, and we see a few 20 cylinders. V.M.V Paducahbuilt is the name of the company.
Reply:Yamahammer, I have seen a few 20 cylinders but not very often. There is quit a bit of the inland waterway industry based here, so we do a few motors for tug boats also. Most of the ones we do are 16 cylinder though. Ive been heliarcing the overspeed trip housings on all the motors for the past year. That aluminum welding has spoiled me. I will post some more pics next week. I will get a few from engine rebuild.

I almost got fired many years ago at Kaiser Steel's Napa (Calif.) fab shop, for taking a few pics of aU-ing press they had built for a customer . ( a U-ING press starts the process of making pipe from sheet steel. ) They was paranoid about stupid ideas somebody might copy their work, and compete.[SIZE="5"Yardbird" |
