Reply:I will tell you, we got to tour the shop today and the things I am most looking forward to using are the TIG's. They have tons of machines out there and its supposedly the top welding program in the state. Now, just to finish those three 3 damn safety tests so I can burn some rodLast edited by Cliff Lodes; 01-05-2009 at 09:27 PM.
Reply:Man, I don't go back to school until the 20th.
Reply:Ive got 2 of the tests down, 1 to go. I would have taken number 3 on friday, but a guy cut his hand pretty bad being stupid. oh well

Reply:being stupid. The second rule they taught us was no horseplay, I guess he missed that lesson last trimester. Anyways, I am taking test 3 tommorow, hopefully, and the rest of the class hasnt even taken test number 1.
Reply:Hows Tig class Craig?
Reply:Humbling, very humbling. When you have to do an open butt weld, then turn it over to see if the entire back edge is fused. AND, the 'wedding band' also has a nice profile. I'm glad I didn't go in there thinking I was going to kick a$$ and take names; well, maybe a little. 9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training. Reply:Craig,Can you share with me the setup for the open butt weld, thickness, material type and prep?I got humbled today as well, I went to visit a guy's home shop today (I met him at the CC class) His son, age 20 has been tig welding light gauge SS in the medical field today and he showed me a few beads on MS, the kid is pretty darn good! I am excited to see the younger guys getting into the field!---as well great to see Father and Son in the shop together "learning from each other"TimA rich man is not the one who has the most but instead one who needs theleast. Reply:7018 and damn i hate them. so hard to start
Reply:Lol but once you get the hang of it, its not so bad.
Reply:hey cliff,i think there's somebody around iuka that makes welding caps and sells them on ebay. they're not on there right now, i think they list around once a month. i'll keep checking and see if i can get a number for them. maybe gaustin knows, that's his neck of the woods.and don't worry about the 7018, you'll learn to be an artist with that rod before long!johnjohnwelding instructorwww.williamrmoore.orgMooreTech College of Technologywelder/fabricatorJGWilson, Inc.www.jgwilson.com
Reply:John- I went to Airgas today and they have some coming in on friday. Im moving right along with the 7018. Today I was running beads, start and stops, and lap joints, and tommorow I start T joints
Reply:Finished T joints, moved onto lap joints. Is it bad that I am extremely bummed that they cancelled school today and I cant go weld?
Reply:I said Id get pictures, and I suck at this computer but here I gofirst attempts at a bead with 7018 rodsassorted pics of the machine I get to usemy helmetme being boredSorry for the crappy quality, but I wasnt taking my digital camera to school so these were taken with my trusty ol razr. I have some of a tjoint im trying to getGo Cards!!!!!
Reply:Cliff,Looks like you are making good progress. You will soon love 7018 in most all positions. I am not near as experienced as many on this board and most of my stick welding was some time ago. I do know that "the machine" does make a difference when running 7018dc. Also you will soon learn that arc distance is critical as well as surface prep. (with all welding)Keep up the enthusiasm and you are sure to be one of the first hired!!, last to go when times are slow" and you will have the skills "to do whatever it takes" in between jobs to get the bills paid and have fun doing it! Reply:Today I got pics of the lap joints, finished lap, started horizontal, and burned the s*** out of my foot. Also, I got picsGo Cards!!!!!
Reply:as promised:Go Cards!!!!!
Reply:Now for my first attempts at horizontal. I spent maybe 20 minutes on these before we had to clean up friday:Go Cards!!!!!
Reply:yes i'm a commercial diver and weld underwater . first get commercial certified as a diver, and dont weld in scuba as you'll will become a statistic.secondly if you want to weld underwater it is not an everyday process if you are thinking of welding in water for living .if your gonna try it . you use straight polarity , we also use a knife switch in the stinger circuit to kill current flow while changing rods, also you need twist lock stinger then you want all your connection in water to be watertight no corriding and no place to get hit from the current . ground should be as close to work as possible and don't put yourself between the stinger or ground .you'll need to where rubber glove under your dive gloves .your rods should be waterproof can purchase them like that or dip your rods in parafin wax.this way you only bring a few rods at a time so the flux wont start absorbing water now to get in water you need a three man dive team supplied air a radio box and a dive helmet with burning lens on it . there a brief start for you
Reply:Yet again, i got more pics to upload. my leathers finally showed today. Im still trying horizontal and getting better each with each bead runGo Cards!!!!!
Reply:Well, today I passed my bend test on horizontal butt joints with 7018 and briefly started Vertical up. Im really enjoying welding and my teacher says I seem to have a gift for itGo Cards!!!!!

Reply:Quick question guys, i am struggling bad on vertical up with 7018. Some people have told me to whip the rod, but according to my text book, whipping a 7018 traps slag. Any suggestions?Go Cards!!!!!
Reply:Cliff,It is particularily important with 7018 (or any rod) to be able to tell the difference between the puddle and the the slag. With 7018 it is critical to keep the rod at a consistant short arc and you should hear it crackle at a very even pitch (this will will be your indicator that the current, rod angle, and arc-length are right. (if all this is right when you finish a bead the slag will likely fall off on it's own. I would practice flat and horizontal until you can consistantly make this happen. Then on Verticle up you will have it much easier. your root pas should usually be a stringer bead with the 'hot' end just slightly higher then horizontal. and you must keep moving but not get ahead of the puddle.once you can do this you can then move to running a weave pattern (hesitating at the toe of the weld and racing across the center like you were scared of it! (if you are set up right, usually two handed) this is really easy and when you get done you will just tap the slag with the chipping hammer and it will fall off very easily.Note: some of the fitters and ironhead will likely be able to give you more detailed and accurate advice, but for sure there is like any process a learning curve (and 7018 is somewhat different) I might note some machines run this rod better then others and I have yet to try it with the AC 7018 rod.Hope this helps?TimA rich man is not the one who has the most but instead one who needs theleast. Reply:Ultrachop - Ive run the beads like you talk about flat and horizontal and the slag falls off. Im just struggling bad with verticle up. I can weave it ok, but my teacher told me to run stringer beads and every time i do, i get the "knuckles" or "boar ****"Go Cards!!!!!
Reply:looks like many schools use XMT's my school used them in all the student booths.. its funny.. shop class in highschool, everyone couldnt wait to do clean up so they could stop doing work.. its the opposite in welding school,,, the teacher rang the cleanup bell and you hear a uniformed "damnit" across the shop..
Reply:Just a quick update, I finally got vertical up and passed my bend test on it and have now moved on to overhead and I love itGo Cards!!!!!
Reply:nice work man!!
Reply:Update again - passed 4g with 7018 (after sustaining severe second degree burns on my hand), started running 6010, passed 2G 6010 todayGo Cards!!!!!
