hey guys ,  first time posting here on this furom , i have been lurking for the past few weeks reading and gaining knowledge a bit about me , im an experienced fabricator and welder , i used to be a machinist but have since quit and now a diesel tech for cummins , i have built several prostreet drag cars and alot of other misc things , i do a good bit of powder coating also now my question , i have done alot of stick and mig welding , i have bought a tig add on kit from http://www.tigdepot.com/products/p35TD-BBTF.htm i bought it about 4 years ago and used it probably a dozen times , i get decent results , all times i welded moly , i welded alot of test pipes together just so i can try to break the weld apart , and i never could , this being said , tig depot and i have heard of other guys using this setup to put together complete cars {meaning race cars}  and im getting ready here to build a dragster frame ,since i dont have alot of tig experience im sure some of the welds will not look picture perfect , im assuming , with tig welding , as long as it is not gouging into the tubing , and has a decent look to the weld it will pass cert ? i have heard that even some of the worse looking tig welds pass cert just becuase of the nature of the process ... what im worried about is the picture perfect weld , i can use the torch properly , and also using the filler material to fill , not melt the opposing metal into a pool any toughts?  im sure someone can give me some insite , also does anyone have some pics of what a bad tig weld that would not pass cert look like ?thanks ted
Reply:i would check with the sanctioning body for the race track you intend to run it on. talk to them about what they are looking for, sone will alow MIG oithers not. if they alow MIG and you use TIG i would think you are starting off a step ahead of the game. i would also be more concernd about a good solid weld then a picture perfect look.be shore to show us your project as it progresses.and welcome to the board. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:nhra requires chromemoly to be tig welded , thus i have no other option , i did a full tube chassis door car but that was mild steel and i migged that whole thing which was legali know with tig welding just becuase it doesnt look picture perfect doestn mean it wont pass a cert test , like the stack of dimes thing , i cant really do that good yet , but my tig welding i can produce very clean welds , with no undercutting of the pipe anyone have links to pics of tig welds that look horrible but still pass a cert test ?i know with the scratch start it has the chance to get dirty , but i think ill be ok , i do like one member of the board does , kinda flick the filler rod , and it works good for me
Reply:i was going to suggest starting on another pice of scrap and carry the arc over to the work, but starting on the filler will probly be just as good. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:next qeustion i have is when and what shize shiel shoudl i be using ?and how far out should i have the electrode ?also what is the easiest way to post pics on here ? should i post them in another topic?thanks
Reply:the cup size and tung. stickout are all inter related to amps and tung. size as well as if its a gas lense or standerd cup. you can use longer stick outs with gas lenses as well as with higher flow rates. standerd cup would be about 20-25 cfpm but the gas lense could go down to as low as 10cfpm depending on size and air movement in the shop. i generaly run my gas lense with about 12-15 and about a 1/8-3/16" stick out with a 3/32" tung. using the clear cup on a W17 torch. i think you added too many questions and not enough info on that one.as for pictures just reduce it to meet the size they want 800X600 or less and post them here. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
