What electrode do you recomend to weld a 3 inch long crack, in a garden shovel?
Reply:Unless you are very experienced ,in welding sheet metal thickness with electrodes do not try it. A 2mm 6012 (don't know your inch fractional size ) would have to be the last resort. A mild steel oxy acetylene filler wire applied with same of course will do the job.Next best is mig with a fine filler wire.Grahame
Reply:I would weld a 1/2" piece of thin strap steel along the back of the crack to reinforce it. It won't hurt your shoveling a bit.***************************************Lincoln AC225 stick welderLincoln HD100 WeldPak flux core wire feed welderThree of the cheapest grinders money can buy
Reply:Just to get a better picture, where is the crack? Is it in the blade (running from cutting edge), or the step, or the shank? What I'm getting at; Is it absolutely imperative that you weld it? Does the crack limit the shovels effectiveness or make it unsafe to use? Of course, you could always run a bead on each side with a small diameter (1/16 or 5/64 inch 6013, and smooth down the beads a tad (The dirt doesn't care what the finished quality of the welds are!)Good luck, cricman |
