Ramps

A fire department wants ramps so they can load some over sized people into the back of their ambulance.  The ramps are 4" x 12' aluminum channel with a hinge in the middle.  I beefed up the hinge area with another 1/4" plate.  Then I spread the ends open so it's easier to align the  tires to the ramp.  The supports are steel tube with plenty of holes for adjustment on uneven ground, tied together with a piece of 1/2" round stock.  They plan on powder coating all the metal pieces(wish I knew that before I spent all that time painting the uprights yellow).  You can see the pipe sticking up and laying down on the mounting angle.. Reply:Oh yeah... he didnt call them over sized.. Super Bariatric was what he called them.  I guess you reach the super class when you go above 700 lbs.   He said that the ramps you can buy are right around 4 grand.. and I threw these together for about 850 bucks.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:Have they given any thought to where to store the ramps? You might be able to pick up some more work putting in a door and under floor storage on the ambulance similar to what's used on U-haul and delivery trucks. I'm working on setting up something like that for the alum loading ramp I bought this summer, so I can keep the back of the work truck clear and still have it if I need it.
Reply:Since they fold and are only 6' at that point, they fit upright on the right rear compartment.   I'm not sure what the gurney weighs, but a local patient tops the scales at over 1100.  I'm not sure about liability since we are not warrantying anything.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
