I have a Hobart Handler 180 mig welder and use a 75/25 mixture. I am welding on 20 GA sheet metal. I am using    .23 wire. Would I be better off with  .30 wire? Also, how much gas pressure should I be using? I also have trouble seeing my weld puddle, any tricks for that? Some of my welds are very good and others totaly suck. I did learn that it really needs to be clean.
Reply:I would say 30-40psi if you are inside. As far as your weld puddle, there are several things that you can try adjusting:  your lens shade, the torch angle can be played with a little, your stickout, and the angle at which you hold your head.  You might need to move your head to the side a little and look around your nozzle.
Reply:15-20 is what I set mine on.  It can be difficult to see clearly.  Listen to the sound and you can hear when it is welding correctly.  You can make a mark with soapstone parrallel to where you are welding.  You have the right size wire.  With metal that thin it helps to do 'spot' welds.  If you try  to weld continuous it just distorts.  As he said above you have to look to the side to see around the nozzle.  Do you have a variable shade helmet?  With thin stuff on low amps you may want to go lighter in shade until you can see.  I couldn't see at all on 12 on my helmet I am around 10Thermal Arc 185 TigHTP 200 MigCraftsman O/A1942 Bridgeport Mill12 Ton Hyd PressConsew Walking Foot
Reply:On the 16-18 ga. material, I typically use .023 wire and a setting of 8 to 10 on the gas. IMO, anything more is a waste of Argon.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Personally, I use about 50psi, but I run really big wire with a smoke sucker on my table....I was just being conservative earlier.
Reply:I just got a millermatic calculator to help get me in the ball park.I just checked 20ga. it says gas is 17-18 on wire size the lowest it goes is .030 at that size wire it says 120 to 135 imp.but .035 wire the speed drops to 105 to 115,so I woild think your wire speed would be higher than 135 imp.   if there is anyone that is wanting one of these calculators go to the miller web site you can get them for $1.50 shipping included.
Reply:I set mine regulator as low as I can get away with...usually around 10 (for welding indoors) and as needed in the wind.
