I'm new to the forum - been looking around and I'm definitely impressed. Lots of knowledge and willingness to help. I've seen several people reference O/A welding of aluminum. I've read about this and heard the stories of WWII planes but I tried it once and the result was so darn ugly that I bought a spool gun and moved on. Now I'm wondering again - is it doable?if it can be done reasonably - how?
Reply:Supposedly doable with the correct flux, and I've heard that a different lens makes it easier because the flux gives off a certain glare. Poke around on tinmantech.com for some info.- John
Reply:I have the setup from tinman nice unit. Tried it for what seems like forever with the end results of just making big pools of melted material. In his instructional video it looks so easy..........
Reply:Yea, I've seen Tinman but I'm leary because I haven't found anyone who can actually do this. You interested in getting rid of his kit?
Reply:I done it with a torch. I used some esab #31 flux. It is blue. I mixed it water and painted it on the joint. I used acetylene (all I had). Make sure you use a acetylene rich flame. I used regular shade five lens. The difficutly seems to be more in not seeing any change. Though once you figure out a rhythm it goes pretty well. I definately welds well and strong, though my welds were not particularly pretty. I did not have trouble blowing holes. As I recall speed and heat control are the challenges. Metal must be clean I used dish washing liquid and ss brush. If it is not clean then you will blow holes, no doubt. As I recall the bead has more tendency to spread and run rather than penetrate downward. Thus joint prep is important. I also have an old book from AlCOA. It demonstrates the different process for welding aluminum. Perhaps you can find one.Every other process is easier than O/A for Al.I think 1500GMC has posted some o/a Al pics.Good luck, Send pics.
Reply:Nope, haven't welded aluminum with a torch yet. I would like to try it one day. It is certainly possible. |
