Hi all, Im making an oiltank out of 16ga steel, I need to weld some mounting bungs in. Will my 135 do it? to mount the bungs, I drill a hole in the steel, slide the bung in to a head, then weld it in around the base of the bung.thanks
Reply:Sounds like a plan. Assuming the bung is something like a pipe union which you will screw a threaded plug into. The bung is probably thicker than the 16 gauge, and so you'll want to angle the gun more towards the thicker piece to prevent burning through the sheet. Try to get a good tight fit on the bung so it easily stays in place for your welding. You could machine a step in the bung OD, so it slips into the tank and sits at height of the step.
Reply:If this is a true threaded weld in bung that you bought you may find it easier to use a hole saw to put the hole in the tank depending on the size of the hole.... the flange of the bung will allow you make the hole a bit oversized without causing any problems._________________Chris
Reply:Hey Pulser, thats what I was trying to get across with the bung. Ill cut a hole, and the bung will have a head that seats against the tank. |
