Hi everybody. I am a new member to this forum, already got some great info's from here, but I've got one issue on my head.I've been trying to find a decent tig unit in my area, nothing fancy, just something to use for mild steel. The only unit that I've found available( I mean financialy available) to me is an inverter stick/TIG unit.I have a stick welder at home so I thought I could buy this unit and turn it into a tig.I am talking about this puppy:http://www.weldingweb.com/attachment...1&d=1167579190How can I tun this bad boy into a decent tig machine?I could really use some help. Reply:Well... you need a terminal adapter, a tig torch, a regulator/flow meter, and a gas bottle.Just out of curiosity... what is financially available? ( what's ur limit )Using a DC stick box for tig works great, the only problem is lack of control for your heat, but you will love it.
Reply:My limit is 400 euros just for the power source. That's about 550$.The thing is that in eastern Europe, Telwin is kinda' the only range of products that I can put my hands on.The Miller or Lincoln dealerships don't go further than Italy, and that's too far for me.Anyway,I heard that the torch must have a gas valve and the only way to start an arc is by scratch start. Also I can't put on foot control for this unit.
Reply:where you live correctlymetal is my future
Reply:I'm from Romania  Tig welding is really new on the market here.I was lucky when I found this store that is the only distributor for Telwin. There are also Esab and some chinese units but they are too expensive for me.
Reply:you *might* try ebay... some sellers might ship to you,... for around your budget you can ( last I looked ) a Miller Maxtar.  I am not dogging the welder you chose... looks like it should do the trick.Yes, you'll have to have a torch with a gas valve.  Arc starting is scratch, but if you're real bored, you can rig up a BBQ lighter.  The initial spark from the lighter will strike the main welding arc.Foot control?... Have a friend turn the knob while you strike an arc.  *warning* ifit's a TAPPED switch, do not try this..  With the arc lit, turn down and up the control, if it changes you can put a control on it... will require some 'backyard ingenuity'* I should say... you SHOULD be able to put a control on it...*
Reply:hello here photographs of a tig and eletrode weldingtoestel of the brand cemontmetal is my future
Reply:I found some tig welders on Ebay that run for 200-450$.Are these units any good. This is as far as my budget can stretch because the shipping taxes are killing me.
Reply:Nobody?C'mon guys.
Reply:you can tig carbon with any stick welder as long as it is DC.you just need the right set up. welder plus, tig rig, flow regulator, argon bottle and hose.i had a friend who ran his tig torch off his miller wire feed welder.i tig off my lincoln SA 200. i also use a miller maxstar for food grade s.s. and small stuff. like 1 inch stainless steel sched 40 butt welds. you would use an AC welder for aluminium.
Reply:I won't do any aluminum because it's very expensive here. All I'll be doing is some SS and mild steel up to 1/8''.Remember,this tig thing is just for weekend projects(dune-buggy,gokart,some carts...) so it's very unlikely to go higher that 1/8''.
Reply:My first tIG rig was a Lincoln Buzzbox AC/DC machine with a aircooled tig torch and a bottle of gas and regulator. It obviously will only do "scratch start" TI ie...  you have to scratch the base metal to start your operation, which give minor fouling to the tungsten by not bad. I built an entire '32 Ford street rod frame with this outfit. Not a beginner, not a pro !
