How many amps do you do a hot pass with. Root was welded at 87amps. 6 inch pipe  .75 wall. 1/16th landing.
Reply:since you're welding up heavy wall, keep your heat the same and see what happends.  If you blow through your root pass you're too hot or you thinned your root pass too thin.  If your weld has undercut you may be too hot or need to fill the corners longer.  Are you hot passing with 7018, 6010, 7010, 8010 ?  It sounds like an ASME test 6010 root, 7018 out. - but can't assume.  If its 7018 keep the amps right around what your at, if its a downhand rod -more amps.
Reply:Maybe with 3/32 7018 you can run a hot pass at 87 amps, but with 1/8" that stuff isnt going to go so well.  I hot pass around 105-115 1/8" 7018.  Everyone is going to be different, just try it out and find what works for you.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:sorry i should of mentiond that, yes it is a test, 1/8"6010 root, 1/8" 6010 hot, 3/32 fillers and stringers. I bombed today with the amps at 115  but maybe i thinned my root to much. lol  blew a hole about 3/16" around....... it sucked!!
Reply:If your test procedure doesn't have a spec on which direction to run your 6010 as a hot pass, i would run it down hand.  Maybe you did.  There are a couple good advantages to 6010 and 70+ rods.  With a little less heat than you used, any hole that you did blow into your root, there's a good chance it would fill in pretty quick (running downhill).  Something to consider.
Reply:I prefer running 6010 down hand for root passes.
