Commander 400 too loud can I add a muffler?

Hi, I am new on here. Sorry if this has been covered before but I have a Lincoln Commander 400 with a deutz diesel. Will it hurt/help to add a muffler to it? It is so loud and it would sure be nice to quiet it down a but.
Reply:In theory Yes, a muffler will mellow the exhaust noise.  A muffler will also reduce the air flow of the exhaust, reducing the effective horsepower of the engine.  The trick will be to find a non restricting muffler that will effectively quiet, to a degree, the engine without adding power robbing back pressure.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. Reply:A muffler works by cooling the exhaust so that the thermal shock is lessened...it is possible to make a muffler which has no noticeable reduction in HP effect on the engine... big with vertical  cooling tubes on the inside which by being heated naturally circulate air upwards works well... of course weight attached to a vibrating engine has to be compensated for... often it is best to suspend the muffler with no load on the engine and run a flexible tube to the exhaust output....Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
Reply:Well I have been routing the exhaust through a 4"  stainless flex from a pellet stove I removed, so I guess you are saying that could be a good thing to remove stress from muffler weight/vibration. I am not too concerned about losing power, the engine has power to spare. Just don't want to hurt the engine. I am sure it will still be loud just from engine noise, this thing is louder than my JohnDeere 210 , hard to believe such a little engine could be so loud but it is a beast.

Reply:My Commander 500 is kinda loud too. I was thinking of getting a short round muffler, with maybe 2" - 3" inlet opening. Then mount it to my skid horizontally, and run the hard pipe, "into" the inlet, without sealing it. Therefore, it would not put any stress on the existing exhaust pipe or muffler/manifold.
