I'm currently rebuilding a really nice early formula car for one of my customers. Amongst the list of repairs is this one....While inspecting these rear suspension uprights after sand blasting, I found several cracks near the caliper ear mounts. Some time ago someone used to much strength to tighten down the caliper mounting bolts and stripped out the threads in the uprights. As a repair they installed some heli-coils or thread-serts. Well...needless to say the repair work wasn't done correctly or safely. The coils were installed to tight and when the bolts were tightened down..... pop !.....the caliper ears split. So I've gouged out the cracks, removed the thread inserts, bored out the holes and then filled them in. I'll machine the new holes and flatten out the mounting surfaces next week, but for now I've posted the weld repairs. Cheers -P.S. if you missed the title...these uprights are Mg. As a warning.....Mg is dangerous to weld, so please do not attempt to do so without some proper experience thanks for checking out the repair -Graham-Mechanical EngineerAutosport Mechanic/Fabricator
Reply:Graham - did you assume a new name on me? I had to laugh because I thought this sounds like a Graham thread as I read it, but I didn't recognize the screen name. Then, at the end your sig gave you away...BTW - how about some details on the car for those of us that are into vintage sportscars?Last edited by TubularFab; 02-21-2009 at 02:59 PM.
Reply:I see things like those split ears and have to shake my head. Yes we've all screwed up on a head bolt or two or on a thermostat housing, but we learn from that. Some people never do. Seems like they were born without sensors from the brain to the hands. The same guy probably twists keys off in the ignition, can't use a styrofoam cup and crushes bunnies when he pets them. Sorry for the hi-jack. Rant over. resume regular posting.Great work, BTW.
