i love finding steel out on the woods, this table was made from the frame of a sleeper sofa, some old pipes and a little rebar.   they had burned the woods not long ago, and most all the fabric was burned off the sofa leaving nothing but steel. some leftover tube from some exhaust work, tried to make an X with it, and some other random stuff:tried doing coping with a band saw and then tried to break it.  the metal started ripping and the weld was still in contact:the joint was perpendicular until the metal started ripping:i tried to get a close up of the welds but the pictures were just way too blurry to get anything.  you guys wouldn;t have anything good to say about 'em anyway.
Reply:Hey you didn't blow thru the pipe!!!!!      I can't weld anything that thin w/my AC welder.Keep practicing.
Reply:blowing through the pipe wasn't a problem, i've got some square tubing a lot thinner that i have a problem blowing through.  i try to take it 1 pass at a time, and letting off the trigger in between passes
Reply:It looks like you didn't use a shielding gas on your mig there.  It doesn't look flux core, or is it?  You can see how it broke.  It was brittle in the surrounding area.  It wasn't from the strength of the weld. In one of the pictures of the pipe, you can see where you "missed" the weld.  You can see the inside where the "gray" penetration has happened, but then you see the reddish brown area that indicates it was either skipped over or poorly welded.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:the machine i use is and old cempbell housefield (spellcheck)  mig welder w/ no gas capability, wire was not flux cored either, does it need to be?  what do you mean missed the weld?  i think you're saying i mssed the joint, maybe wheere i had made multiple passes on the butt weld

Reply:Hey, if he was able to run any kind of bead with solid wire and no shielding gas I give him an A plus just for keeping with it.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:I agree with Lug on this one! you need to get some fluxcore wire to get that penatration, running solid wire without gas will give results like that. remember to clean the area where you plan to join the pieces together. In the pictures the metal appears to not have been cleaned by grinding or wire brushing prior to running your welds. Practice more with the machine and fluxcore wire and you'll see better results.Last edited by specter; 02-24-2009 at 09:15 AM.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:yeah normally i would have cleaned it, but it was just practice, and my 4 in. grinder is broke at the moment.  i said earlier i had tried to cope the pipe with a portable bandsaw, that's why.
