Well I started to lay out some of the pieces for a cart for the Powermax 350 and I got rained-in.  That's right, rained-in seeing as the new work bench is STILL out on the shop apron waiting for a thicker top.  I guess I should just go ahead and move it in until I find something but...Anyway, back on topic.  I've got my neighbor's second generator in the shop that hadn't been running right for a long time and also has a broken kill switch.  I brought it in a few weeks ago and quickly discovered the poor running problem that turned out to be a disconnected choke return spring allowing the choke to partially close causing a rich fuel mixture and erratic operation.  To make matters worse, the plastic choke shaft lever is broken preventing the choke from closing when the run/choke lever is moved to the CHOKE position so I have to figure a way to fix that if I can.In the meantime I decided to put a set of wheels on it so he doesn't have to drag it around with the thick rope he had tied to the frame.  The wheels are recycled from an engineless mower deck that are the perfect size.  I used the same basic method as the previous generator running gear except these wheels use the original axle bolts instead of a common axle for each pair as is the case with the other one.  So no big deal and quick little project but hey, it's one that involed welding and as such was fun.MM200High #1 (20 volts)WFS 48%C-25 @ 25cfhGenerator frame getting prepared for axle bolt brackets.  That's the unit on the floor.Close up of one of the axle bolt brackets. All four axle bolt brackets welded to frame. All four wheels installed.Frame upright and on all fours. Thanks for looking.Last edited by duaneb55; 02-14-2009 at 10:11 PM.Reason: Added welding parametersMM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Good job, Duane. Hope you have some luck w/ the choke problem. If they keep going these small engines are gonna be all plastic. Reply:If I had to guess it's like a starter/generator.  Bear with me.You can have a powerful starter or a high output generator but put them both together and the best you'll get is an average starter/generator.Or you can have a combo unit that is a better than average starter but less than average generator. And then you can have one that is a less than average starter but better than average generator. Can't save your cake and eat it too.Take that to a welder/generator and you pretty much get the same thing and being a welder first the driver is sized for that requirement rather than the generator and as such it's not as efficient on fuel as a comparably sized generator only that has its driver properly sized for the rated generator output.  I could be off but that's how I see and understand it.In addition, running a 12K generator at half capacity will drink more bug juice than a 6K at full load due to the efficiency factors of each driver.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:The new choke shaft assembly arrived from B&S on Thursday this week via USPS and I got it installed this morning along with a new ignition kill switch.  Put everything back together and reinstalled the engine/generator on the frame and waited for the epoxy to cure that I applied to a couple seam cracks in the plastic gas tank before I got started on the choke shaft and ignition switch. As with many "Made In U.S.A." products components, note the "Made In Mexico" on the packaging.  If made in the US I'd guess the part would have cost 2-3 times or more the $3.85 I paid.Kit included new shaft/lever, return spring, choke plate and foam filter.Shaft/lever assembly installed and read for final reassembly.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:You'd think I've been around the block enough times to realize if your 'gut' is telling you something you should listen. While waiting for the epoxy to cure enough to reinstall the plastic gas tank on my neighbor's generator I took it for a test spin around the yard and across the patio.  In doing so my original concerns regarding the lighter 1/8" angle iron and lack of a full width axle shaft for the wheels proved to be correct and one of the angles bent leaving the wheel tilted at a significant angle. So back over to the shop and after pulling the unit back off the frame I set about installing the gussets that I thought about incorporating in the design in the first place but simply chose not to.In keeping with my recycle mentality that says "don't throw anything away... yet" I prepared 8 gussets from pieces cut from of the mitered angles used for the 180 SD shelves... ...and welded them in place to prevent a reoccurrence of the tilt-a-wheel syndrome. As with the other generator running gear, my neighbor was as pleased with the results as I am.Anybody need a good used ceiling fan that was removed during a remodel?MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Duane:I wondered about that in my subconscious mind. Thanks for the follow-up. We all get better here. As far as throwing away useful material: If I can't wear a shirt anymore, it's outta here. But there's no way I'll throw away a piece of steel. I just made a simple rod holder for class with shop scrap. There's nowhere to put our cut filler at the end of class. So, I took a piece of 3/4" square square tubing, 7" long, welded a 'foot' on it and used a radiator hose clamp to fasten it (vertically) to the conduit feeding my station outlet box. Now I have a square tube to stick my cut filler into. 9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training. Craftsman O/A---Flat, Vert, Ovhd, Horz. Reply:I had a similar, but not identical, problem when I built the cart for my first crackerbox. The wheels were bolt on without a thu axle, and they always rubbed against the cart because the bolts allowed them to bowleg.  I never fixed it until I got the new crackerbox, and had to take the old one off to mount the new one.  I finally bought some pnooooooomatic tires and mounted them on an axle.  Now I'm thinkin' radial tires would be the bomb"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Now I'm even more curious. Did the 1/8" angle itself, bend? Or did the welds pull out of the thin tubing of the original frame?  Nice gussets, regardless. (Which is probably the answer. If the tubing had torn (my original thought), the gussets would serve no purpose.)9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training. Reply:if the  design had used a single rod as axle for  2 wheels, it seems like there would be less moment to bend the angles. maybe thats why some devices come with  one bar for two wheels..cheaper than  cutting/welding 4 gussets..?

Reply:Absolutly correct. For a cheap $30 unit It works well once you get it adjusted. Have repaired several auto door panels(inside), built a cat climber thing out PVC pipe, and my son fixed the plastic duct work for directing chips to the collector on his wood plane. And the plastic pool my dogs use as a water bowl.Last edited by Magnetic Mechanic; 02-23-2009 at 11:44 PM.Reason: forgotA butterfly without wings, is just an ugly bug

Reply:Duane,If you had some small pieces of square tube, you could have drilled a hole through the tube and then welded the tube to the generator frame tube.  Built-in gussets and so forth.  More than one way to skin a cat.  Your fix seems fine.  Not what a production run would use, but you were 'playing' so I guess labor time doesn't count, eh?  But I guess this way you found a use for those small triangle off-cuts you had.  re: the epoxy repair of the gas tank.  You have to get the epoxy to stick to the plastic tank AND you have to get the epoxy to not dissolve or soften from the gasoline.  Maybe you lucked out in the goop you used.  My luck with epoxying plastic is hit-or-miss lately.  Than again, some of the stuff I tried to epoxy back together tried to stand up to my 5 year old.  Sometimes I think he could break an anvil.Magnetic,I'm still trying to get the hang of that H-F hot air squirter.  It seems to work fine, but the plastic I tried to mend pretty much just globbed and melted and I couldn't really seem to get any of the filler rods to bond.  It was probably just an 'unweldable' plastic alloy.    Any hints you have on using it?  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...

Reply:MM,That's pretty much how I did it.  Sort of like TIG or O/A welding, except with a hot-air nozzle instead of a flame or arc and a plastic filler rod instead of a metal one.I could have just been the scrap plastic I tried it on.  Unknown 'alloy' and such.  Didn't feel motivated at the time to scrounge up a 'real' piece of PVC and use the PVC filler rod.  Maybe next time I'll do that.  Maybe if we post enough, Duane will come back and check his thread and see where it has wandered off to, or been hijacked to.    The best laid schemes ...
