shaft build-up

got a call from the boss tonight, have to go in early tommorow to build up a shaft on a water pump. it broke next to where the key fits into the shaft. i know i can make a brass key to keep the keyway safe with minimal touchup, my question is on the shaft. are these shafts chrome or just plain ole steel, min preheat and burn away. this is an industrial water pump driven by a deutsch diesel, something in the neighborhood of 1200 gph."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
Reply:Sorry I didn't see this earlier.... hope the repair went ok. On some water pumps (quaity made ones) the shafts and internals are actually stainless. Sometimes you will see a stainless impellar with a stainless bushing pressed into the impellar which rides on a shaft that is probably made of 4140 steel. If you're not sure or can't find out you may want to use stainless, maybe a 316 series._________________Chris
