Pipe Fence Costs

I'm having a 3 bar pipe fence constucted around my house/barn.  The total footage is 1260 feet and we are using 2 3/8 schedule 40 new pipe.  I'm also have 2 cattle guards installed and having the pipe painted.  I was quoted $24K for the job and was inquiring if this is a reasonable price or way out of line.  Thanks for your help.
Reply:you're leaving out important details, like how far apart the posts are and how far they're set into the ground.Just pricing the pipe, and guessing at 6' posts every 20', you're talking about ~350 sticks of pipe.  New material purchased from www.metaldepot.com (an expensive online steel service center) would run $37K alone.  You could probably source new material locally for perhaps 1/2 to 2/3 of that cost.  Figure the pipe alone, and I'm talking about new material, would run you $18 to $20K.  That's for unpainted material.I would guess that your contractor must have a supply of used material to quote the job that low.  Either that or he has a line on a supply new pipe that someone wants to offload quickly...I wouldn't say your quote of $24K is out of the ball park...It might even be a bargain depending on the design of the fence, the paint, the source of the material, the size of the workcrew, and the turnaround time for completing the job....There's too many unknowns to give you a definite answer...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:Spacing on the posts were quoted at 10ft so around 130 posts in total.  The quote is for all new pipe, nothing secondary or used.  I live in a rocky area so the posts are set around 2.5 feet depth.  He quoted Rustoleom paint for the fence and the cattle guards are 16ft. The estimated time from start to finish is 3 weeks.

Reply:I agree, also sounds pretty cheap if not too cheap.  I also would advise against 10ft post spacings.  I personally on 2" sch40 wouldn't want to go over 8ft at the most.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:Re-Painting a 3 year old pipe fence with some surface rust. To avoid using a wire brush does anyone recommend any other products to eliminate the rust before painting?  Has anyone ever used Rust Bullet?
Reply:We do a lot of pipe fence. We almost always use 2 3/8 we cut em at 8ft and put them 3 foot in the ground.
