Finishing off the metalworking portion of my home hobby shop. Let me know if I missed anything as I hate realizing I forgot a tool or material after starting a project. Starting on home A/C plugs with plans to later use 230v.Miller Diversion 180TD Cutmaster 42 (already have Craftsman compressor for shop air)SS, Alum, mild steel rodsArgon bottle w/ gasMiller elite helmetMiller welding jacket (didn't feel like bursting into flames with my grease monkey suit)Miller TIG glovesMisc: Thickness gauge, soapstone marker, magnetic 90* "material holders", 6" bench grinder, cutmaster consumables, SS brushes (one SS, one for alum)What tungsten is recommended? (planned on grabbing them at local shop)Last edited by sj_engr; 08-15-2011 at 01:33 PM.
Reply:welding table, bench vise, hand held grinder, die grinder with burrs, face shield, safety glasses, cut off saw, mig welder, o/a torch set, etc. the list is endless. oh and 2% ceriated is a good start.Last edited by jbmprods; 08-15-2011 at 01:44 PM.225NT bobcatAEAD200LEScott 125mm175, mm252 w 30A, PT225mm211, TA 181iHyper Therm 380, cut master 529100X & XX, Digital Elite6 Victor setssmith little torch, meco midget kalamazoo band sawsteel max saw evoulution circular saw
Reply:Thanks for the reply. Added a vise to the workbench already. Cutmaster comes with safety glasses and got a face shield for my pneumatic cut-off & die-grinder. I have a small o/a set for past jeweler repairs/brazing. Good idea on the hand held grinder, any recommendations?
Reply:i prefer Bosch or Hitachi 4.5" with a paddle switch.  i don't like a thumb switch. if the grinder gets away from you and wants to eat you, it will.225NT bobcatAEAD200LEScott 125mm175, mm252 w 30A, PT225mm211, TA 181iHyper Therm 380, cut master 529100X & XX, Digital Elite6 Victor setssmith little torch, meco midget kalamazoo band sawsteel max saw evoulution circular saw

Reply:Tig Torch Holder- you can make you're own but Harbor Freight  has them for cheap if you live close to a HFhttp://www.google.com/search?client=...UTF-8&oe=UTF-8Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:Great idea, thanks for the feedback and links.
Reply:Perhaps a semester or two at your local Community College to get a basic foundation of welding instruction. The best equipped shop (hobby or pro) is worthless without the skills. Or were you just going to pick it up on your own? That seems to be the current trend.Seems like a critical item to leave out of the list.E
Reply:Taught myself how to rebuild engines and such, but I will try and look into the local class schedule. Thanks for the feedback. More focused on right tools since that's one of the things I learned the hard way.
Reply:Yer TIG arc won't like being in the neighborhood of the 90* magnet. The magnetic field is somewhat disruptive.Better to buy (or build) a 90* clamp.Rex
