Finally someone semi-close to where I lived called me back from Daytona state about there welding program. I'm excited and really want a change of career! It's gonna take a lot,(everything u want does!) been away from school for 13yrs so I guess I'm feeling a bit intimated. Lol.  I'm a hands on learner so I believe I'll do great.Just wondering what to expect?  It said 1yrs 2days a week? Is this where you learn technical importance, safety, and most basics to ALL welding processes? Then from there is it up to the individual to learn more certificions/keep up on dues to be really recognized unless self employed? (GTAW 3mos now)Wish I could learn under someone b/c I feel I learn best that way unless I know or understand what I'm doing, then practice makes perfect!  There is So much to welding & I can't feel comfortible "saying" I'm a chassis/car builder, roll cages ect.(that's what I wanna do!) If I don't understand what materials to use, heat to put to those materials in order to keep a cage together god forbid something unfortunate happens, cooling, exhaust, or any other fusion process it takes to produce solid work.   If anyone wants to add please do, thanks for reading. Just want to be the best at EVERYTHING I do! Better than YOUMillermatic 211 auto-set w/spool gun Diversion 165375 XtremeDigital elite

Reply:If its only 2 days a week, I would hope those are 8-10 hr. days.  You eat up a lot of time getting material, cutting material, fitting, etc.
Reply:let's not start with the whole grammar thing again lol.
Reply:good luck and keep at it by the way. im a little nervous about the working world if im luck enough to get into a place while in school.at times it can get boring when the instructor goes into all the details about the welds and how they penetrate. and how machines work etc etc. but this is also just as important as the hands on training and weirdly enough this facintated me and i really didnt get bored.

Reply:This is a really good resource and it is free.http://www.esabna.com/EUWeb/AWTC/Lesson1_1.htmIf you go through all the units you have all the theory you will need starting out.
Reply:You might want to look at some different schools in your area if there are any. The 1 year/2 day a week thing is not a whole lot of class/lab time.My last semester was 6 days a week, 6 hours per day for 12 weeks and that was all hood time. Of course, that was also 3 four credit classes. Advanced SMAW, Advanced GMAW and Advanced GTAW. It was a serious work load and I barely got through it but I did with a 4.0 GPA. I'm 48 and I was keeping up with students less that half my age in 100 deg. temps in that lab.Not bragging, just saying that it can be done if you have the desire and drive. I understand that you may be doing this and working a job but some colleges offer the same classes in the evenings or on weekends. Yes, that makes for a ridiculous schedule of work and school but you get out of this education stuff exactly what you put in.Personally, I don't think you would get the same level of competence with the processes working 2 days a week. I found out in my first semester that working on a difficult objective (such as overhead plate weaves for example) that it would take me a few consecutive days of practice and attempts. I had poor results with days off in between or on a different process. But, again that's just my experience. Look around, talk to working welders in your area and find out what they have to say about the welding schools. That's how I learned about the program that I'm in.Also, once you start school, focus on it. Seriously, put everything you have going on (personal projects, girlfriend(s), work, buddies etc.) on the back burner and work as hard as you can. Sure, you can just drift through welding school and possibly even pick up some certs but it doesn't sound like that's what you want. What ever school you chose, see if you can pick up extra lab time. Some schools have open lab (extra time that you come in and work on your welding objectives) and you should get it for free as part of your tuition.Good luck.EricP.S. Look into the Federal Pell grant program. It has basically paid for my education. Also, the AWS offers scholarships and there are others available and they are pretty easy to qualify for. It just takes a little research to find them.
Reply:When I went to school, it was M-F 0700-1500. The first couple of weeks were all classroom work. Passing safety courses, insurance stuff, etc. Next we had torch cutting, followed by 7018 smaw on plate, 6010 smaw on plate, pipe welding, gmaw, gtaw, brazing, soldering, then we finished with oaw. It was a recommended 18 month course, although it was work at your pace. It took me 6 months and 1 week to finish and get all certs. There was also a mandatory math class for welding, machine shop, and hvac guys( I tested out the first day since I was fresh outta college with a degree in engineering). Every week we had 4 full days in the shop and 1 half day. On the half day we would spend our remaining time in the classroom doing blueprints and stuff like that.If you have any other questions, feel free to shoot me a pm and I'll be glad to answer any questions as best I canGo Cards!!!!!
