I made an aluminum hand rail today for a trailer ramp.  It's pretty basic.  What I wanted to show the greener aluminum TIG welders is how I run the weld around pipe.  This isn't necessarily how other welders weld pipe, but it's how I do.  So I talked my buddy into filming my hand motion and taking a few photos.  I do a combination of twisting my wrist and rolling the torch in my fingers.  Around the pipe on the down hill welding, if I'm running out of room, I'll just feed filler from the wrong side.  To keep it looking halfway decent, I'll back step a little over where I fed it in.Hope you enjoy. The sound turned out pretty odd.. That's not welder, it's the youtube conversion. Attached ImagesCommon sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:That's just excellent, thanks for sharing this.  Good instruction but also shows what excellent wells look like and what we all should strive for...Keep up the great work and have fun...
Reply:Thats exellent!  i am not very good at round stuff.  I usually do mine in 3 to 4 steps, but the way you show will be in 2.Will use or try that method next time i have the torch out.thanks for sharing with us.

Reply:Dial-up guy here. Thanks for the 3 pics, makes complete sense. I'm surprised you didn't go 'lefty' at 90*, which would add two more starts.  How far can you 'go backward'? (downhill in the third pic) (It's no longer a push weld, the filler is on the wrong side. I thought TIG was mandatory push, obviously wrong.) So much to learn. 9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training. Craftsman O/A---Flat, Vert, Ovhd, Horz. Miller Syncrowave 250

Reply:Very nice video and photos, thanks.
Reply:Nice motion, using a pivot point is pretty straight forward if you guys just give it a try.  I liked the jump on the backside of the torch.  Play around with dipping on both sides of the torch, aluminum IMO is easier than steel because of the bigger/wetter puddle.   What size filler is that?  Looks like 3/16"?Lots of toys.
Reply:Thanks for the compliments.  The pipe is 1 1/4" schedule 40, 1/8" filler rod, 3/32 tungsten, 200 amps at # 8 on the dig side.  I was lazy just bumped the dig up so I wouldnt have to change out the tungsten to 1/8".Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
